John Kerry uses articles of his faith to inform nearly every political position he takes--except when it comes to abortion.
JOHN KERRY reaches the finish line tomorrow having had to speak more words about religion this year than ever before in his long political career. The point has been to reveal his deepest values, say his aides, and it has been a telling revelation.
Kerry, who is Catholic, has repeatedly emphasized that he would not "legislate" any "article of [his] faith." Kerry thus might seem to be recognizing merely that the First Amendment forbids establishing religion, including any article of specifically Catholic faith.
Yet Kerry seeks to convey a particular point, for consider that he sees the pro-life view that life begins at conception and should not be deliberately destroyed as just such an "article of faith." Ergo, he cannot "legislate" it when life issues are involved, as they are with abortion and embryonic stem-cell research.
The difficulty with the senator's position is that the pro-life view is an article not of Catholic or other faith--you will not find it in the creeds or other formal statements of doctrine--but one of morality. You don't have to be a Catholic or at all religious to be pro-life. Indeed, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops makes that very point on its website: "All persons, not just Catholics, can know from the scientific and medical evidence that what grows in a mother's womb is a new, distinct human being" that merits "respect" and protection.
Congress thus is under no First Amendment constraint should it wish to pass pro-life legislation, as it has done on many occasions (over Kerry's
objections). The Supreme Court confirmed the congressional authority in a 1980 case challenging the Hyde Amendment, which bars the use of federal funds for abortion except in certain exceptional circumstances. One argument was Kerry-like--that the amendment violates the establishment clause because "it incorporates into law the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church"--and the court easily rejected it.
Kerry has not explained why he regards the pro-life view as an article of Catholic faith. He has made much of the fact that it is a church teaching. But should you think that, for Kerry, any church teaching is an "article of faith" and therefore something that he, as a senator, may not legislate, then think again, for his church has other teachings that he is only too happy to legislate. Indeed, he has invoked church teachings to explain his work in behalf of justice, the environment and the alleviation of poverty. Only an overriding commitment to abortion rights--he vows to appoint only "pro-choice" justices--can explain why for Kerry the pro-life view is an "article of faith" but other church teachings are not.
A revelation about Kerry came in July when he surprised aides by announcing that he believes that life begins at conception. But of course Kerry's statement meant nothing practically, since, for him, no article of faith can be legislated.
The upshot is that Kerry speaks about the issues of abortion and embryonic stem-cell research in a morally shriveled fashion (lacking nuance, indeed). In January, on the 31st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which declared the abortion right, Kerry released a statement supporting the decision that neglected entirely the moral issues involved in choosing an abortion.

I have never thought of the Bush family as conservative. When Reagan picked Bush Sr. for vp, I was very mad.(Had been hoping for Jack Kemp at the time). Reagan always thought he needed balance in a ticket, which was why he lost for Ford in 1976 when he choose a liberal Republican vp.

Russia told Bush twice that Saddam was going to attack us, that alone is enough to raise grave attention. Everyone including the UN believed Saddam was dangerous and helped dangerous enemies to the US. It was soon after 9-11. John Kerry said he would have done the same thing and indeed did vote to do this.
John Kerry said Bush could have used a bit more diplomacy. Problem was the UN and the Frogs were dirty with Saddam with weapons, oil for food and who knows what else. The Frogs told Saddam not to worry, the US will never attack because they will veto it, no matter what. Diplomacy in this case failed and war came because of France who made Saddam think the fix was in. Not that I think Saddam was going to put on tie-dyed tee shirt and start throwing flowers around anytime soon, but diplomacy would have worked better if Saddam would have thought Bush was going to attack, maybe he would have complied with the inspections. This was a weak chance, but much better than France's "help". France and Saddam did not know Bush very well.

Bush is more conservative than Kerry. Hell, Ted Kennedy is suppose to be more conservative than Kerry, so I suppose I would vote for Ted if he were running against Kerry, ouch.

Rrrright. Fascism is socialism(i.e centralized government) to me and Webster. Kerry will make us more centralized or try. I think it is the course and history of all democracies. They end up on a course to be totally centralized once the people realize they can vote moneys from future people to themselves. Then we have revolutions and start all over again and repeat history again. Man likes reruns.
When we made Senators subject to popular vote instead of appointments of state legislatures in the early 1900s, we turned the Senate into nothing more than another house of Representatives. This was the single most damaging thing we ever did to this country and set the path to the increased power of the centralized government even further and decreased state powers.

The Democrats are using Judges to autocratically and forcibly suppress the will of the people and their laws. Look what one judge did to a overwhelming vote in Louisiana. Bush's Florida vote was counted twice according to state statues and he won twice. The state legislature's job is to appoint electors which they did.
Who would you rather have picked a US President? The Florida Supreme Court or the United States Supreme Court??????? The state legislature would have picked the same electors no matter how many times the Florida Supreme Court would have twisted and turned until they somehow were able to find enough votes for Gore. If that was not enough then the US house would have voted, one vote per state and Bush would have won then. This is how it should have been done rather than in the courts. Funny how Nixion had class in 1960 compared to Gore in 2000.

Thanks for the dialog, I hope we can disagree without being disagreeable. I know I can not stand this and will be glad when it is over. If Bush loses, the only thing which may bring comfort is if Dashel loses in South Dakota.

Clinton was criminal and yes the government was, and would be, repressive under the democraps.
However, there are more bleeding heart liberals and civil libertarians in the democratic party, and it would be somewhat more difficult to ram police state legislation through with all the little liberty gadflies in the dems have. The republicans are by and large content to live in a police state, and have happily traded their 'security' for the illusion of liberty.
The socialist democrats can be just as warmongering as anyone else when push comes to shove. And just as fascist if the conditions are right.
However, I just feel that the socialist democrats might leave the constitution on life support a little longer before then plug gets pulled. The fascist republicans with Ashcroft will start making the funeral arrangement immediately. Just watch.
