I had cholestasis with both of my pregnancies. Although I completely trusted my OB, I took it upon myself to seek out additional information from other sources as well. This included seeing a naturopathic doctor. Between pregnancies, she instructed me in a Liver Cleansing
process. This was followed with an herbal supplement. These two herbs (dandelion & milk thistle) are reportedly safe during pregnancy, but I elected not to take them during the first trimester. I did take them the 2nd trimester and changed my diet a bit. I couldn't afford to eat organic everything, so I ate organic dairy & meat. These things tend to have hormones added to them and cholestasis is thought to be from a hormone sensitivity so it made sense to reduce the amount of hormones I was exposing my liver too. I also took absolutely NO medications because that would just be one more thing for my liver to deal with. Typically, cholestasis begins earlier and gets worse with each pregnancy. I developed it at 30 weeks the first time and my little boy came 4 weeks early and was pretty stressed out, I believe due to the cholestasis. I didn't develop symptoms until 33 weeks with my second pregnancy and they weren't nearly as bad (I maybe had 2 nights I didn't sleep during my second pregnancy; my first pregnancy, I slept an hour a night for 6 weeks). Sadly, I had to have an urgent c-section 3 weeks early due to other complications, but my liver function was much better. I had them check my liver enzymes every month until 20 weeks and every week after that just to be on top of it. I also did go on the URSO acid once the cholestasis developed. I had symptoms for 3 weeks after my first pregnancy, but for about 1 hour after my second. I believe that if I was super strict with my diet (no cheating on ice cream, etc.) during my next pregnancy that I might eliminated it all together.
