Its pretty common to eat fish whole in Japan, but I've never witnessed it raw. Homemade fish sauce is essentially raw whole fish.
Unlike land-based meat seafood "auto-lyzes", it dissolves back into seawater essentially-I think its valid for the paleo. Koreans make KimChi with meat and fish, but as this is fermented in a crock, it might be a little far the paleo.
There's a kind of skate they eat-but it was a tough go for me. It doesn't really have any meat, and its all cartilage and fat-with some sort of rubbery skin. I get the shudders just writing about it.
Oh yeah, I'll take seconds of the Sea Snail & Sea Cucumber sashimi please.
The bones are left in sardines, anchovies, and eel, BUT they are'nt raw either.
