This one is very dangerous! It can cause death if left untreated. The most common sign is open sores (can look like leprosy) and it can cause the spleen to get larger than the liver. It comes from sandfly bites and is found in many countries. There have been many cases from soldiers that were in Iraq.

Get to a doctor ASAP! This one moves fast and needs to be treated very aggresively. Glucantim, Pentostam, Miltefosine are used to treat it. Miltefosine is the best one because the leishmaniasis have become very resistant to the other two. This is one of the few parasite infections that I do recommend prescription drug be used. There is a time and a place for prescription drugs and this is definately one of those times!
