I have had terrible constipation and hard stools for the past few months and I was encouraged to try a woman colon hydrotherapist at my health food store. I took one on July 4th, and even though I had some relief for a couple of days, I'm not sure I want a woman doing this procedure since I am a man. She also took out the tube mid way thru becasue she said I was dripping and had me go to the toilet. Up to that point, I hadn't really passed any stool, just colored water. On the toilet, I did pass the stool and then at the end of the session, she had me go to the toilet again. Is this the way the colonic procedure is supposed to work? I thought the machine flushed you out.
It cost $70 and she wanted to let me have two more for $80 for a total of $150 paid in advance. That is pretty pricey even at $50 a session, so I just took the one to see how my system reacted. It helped the next day with a soft stool,and then went right back to the hard stool and straining.
I am really not comfortable with a woman doing this process, but there is no way I can insert the tube because I am very sore in that area. I probably could do it if push came to shove, but I am concerned she was not doing the colonic the proper way by having me get up and go to the toilet two times. What say you?

This is a reply to # 918,667I'd say the whole procedure sounds way too expensive. What I would do is fast for one day. Drink plenty of water or juice. That night drink a laxative tea, like Smooth Move. Next morning, still drink plenty of water. Even though you didn't eat anything, you still might have good BM. Drink more water to maintain hydration, then later in the day, when you are sure the laxative has run its course, do a salt water flush. Perhaps prior to that just do a salt water enema.
When I do a liver flush, the next day, I'll do enema around noon and a salt water flush later in the day. It's really effective at cleaning you out.
Of course, what you eat after that will determine what happens the next day. Certanly avoid any meat on that first day after.Advertisement

Thank you for your quick reply. I might give that fast a try. Where do you get the Smooth Move laxitive tea? I've never heard of it, is it sold in health food stores? How about eating chicken or fish afterwards? I haven't been eating any red meat, but I am eating the other plus plus salads, fruit, dried fruit, soups, and different types of nuts (almonds, brazil, etc.) Also All Bran and Grape Nuts with fruit for breakfast.

This is a reply to # 918,688It's standard fare in any healthfood stores, may even be in a regular drugstore or supermarket.
Do a curezone search for smooth move and you'll find all kinds of posts.
I'm no expert on anything. I'd avoid meat (but I do eat eat) only because it would seem to be such a heavy load if you are trying to avoid constipation ... for now, anyway. Fish and chicken sounds fine. Salads and nuts are good, too.
When I make salad - I take cuccumbers, celery, carrots, lettuce, apples ... chopped it up in food processor. Add a couple of scoops of sour cream and 2 tbsp of sunflower oil. Makes a few cups.
Have you done any extended colon cleansing programs? I've always used Colonix. Some like it some don't. Check the sponsor listings at the bottom of the page and read through some of the other Bowel Cleansing forums.
I also drink a combination of ACV w/baking soda, colonix, a dash of Sea Salt , cinnamon tea from raw cinnamon, cayenne pepper, topped off with OJ - this all my latest concoction, taken from various protocols.
Read up also on cayenne pepper - another one of those "magic bullets".

The procedure you describe doesn't sound like anything I've experienced, and I've had several colonics with great success. I wish I knew of the machine that I was attached to, as it was terrific and I would recommend it to you because I had full control over the machine and over the procedure. The therapist showed me how to massage my abdomen and came in only to check I was ok and if I needed help, and gave me lots of good ideas and support when I felt comfortable to receive it. Otherwise I had total privacy. What you describe sounds like a waste of money :-( and not a positive experience as it should have been. I'm so sorry you had this experience. I would try Oxypowder (my other great love) as this will not let you down. If you would like to try colonics again, maybe get a recommendation from someone on these boards who knows your area and a good therapist with good equipment. Good luck.Advertisement

e-mail so I never got anything, but thank you both again for your help. Until a few days ago I felt very poorly. I received a call from the lady that gave me the colonic on July 4. That was the last time I felt halfway decent and I was seriously considering doing it again. Thankfully, the last few days I had some good results using Natural Calm and Organic Aloe Vera juice. I posted some details on the Constipation Forum.

Sometimes, especially if a person has hardened stool that is not breaking down during the colonic, a piece of stool can clog the tube preventing a thorough release. Since you mentioned that you were leaking, it is my guess that this is what happened and she had you use the toilet to eliminate the blockage. She may have had to unblock the tubing while you were in the bathroom, as well. And using the toilet after the colonic is very common. Since this was your first colonic it is unlikely that the procedure would have cleared your entire colon and virtually everyone has to expel additional stool or, at least, water.
Also, some colon hydrotherapists will offer a discount on a series of colonics...but to take advantage of the reduced rate, they will ask to be paid upfront. Actually, she gave you a very reduced rate for 3 colonics...$150 vs. $210. Most hydrotherapists that I know of will only reduce their standard rate by $5 or $10 per colonic for a series.
Nevertheless, it is clear that you are not comfortable having a female perform this procedure and that alone will inhibit good results. In order to have a successful colonic, you have to be able to relax. If you want to try another colonic, I would suggest that you find a male colon hydrotherapist. Otherwise, you can perform multiple enemas yourself.
Also, make sure that you are drinking sufficient water. Hard stool is almost always due to dehydration.- Re: Just an FYI... SF1933

The only problem I had with colonics were if they would help and how could I handle them. In addition to not being comfortable, it really was a high priced enema if I have to run to the bathroom instead of having the machine remove the stool. As someone mentioned, the stool could have plugged the machine and if that was the case they are not worth it. (I also didn't want to have one in 3 days as it was pretty taxing as I am 74.) However, if it is a different machine I went to check it out but found they were in Australia. When I entered my zip code which is in Nevada, there were none available in the area. As much as I would love to visit Australia, I am putting that on hold!(no pun intended)
Since I have been having this chronic constipation and unknown rectal bleeding for quite a while, I am concerned that I may have colon or liver cancer. I would like to rule that out with some blood tests, but unfortunately my doctor in SF is on vaction till the 25th. He is the only one in the medical profession that I fully trust. So I am really between a rock and a hard place.
I think I am going to buy a champion juicer tomorrow and start juicing some carrots and other vegtables. I am trying not to use any laxatives even like Senna products as I don't want to be dependent on them. I am going to use some Col-ace, a stool softner which hasn't been worked that well lately, but maybe with a liquid diet it might work better. Thanks for your reply. So you saw the machine I was referring to? Its a great system if you ever get an opportunity.
You may also want to get onto some probiotics to recolonise your bowel with good bacteria as well, and also look into a parasite cleanse. Sometimes parasites can lead to constipation, and most likely if you've never had a cleanse before that you have them (almost all of us do).
