This is a normal phenomenon. They are your own cells, and sometimes they come with little veins. It is normal, but if you experience inflammation, this is a sign to see ophthalmologist, or eye specialist. There are cases where certain pathogens can enter the area, but is usually accompanied by immune-reactions which are extremely painful.
I believe that chronic illness from parasitic infections, can cause this, but I do not know why.
