Pre-1950's medical books

Hi MH,

I was in a used book store today and decided to look for medical books published before 1950. There was one, 'Appendicitis' by John H. Tilden, M.D., first printed in 1913. It was short, so I sat and read it.

He detailed the common non-surgical treatments and they were beyond bizaar, usually killing the patient. His prescriiption... *drum roll* ... water fasting and daily enimas. He strickly forbid the use of serums (drugs). There were other procedures such as ice packs on the abdomen and keeping the feet warm, but he stated these were not necessary. His patients usually recovered between 14-24 days and were to maintain a liquid diet until their bowels moved on their own. Only then could they return to a solid food diet.

A couple of interesting things: he stated that if milk was used during the liquid diet phase, it had to be "chewed" because milk reacted in the body like solid food. Also, he refered to many of his fellow doctors as members of the Stuffed Club. This was a old reference to a stick (or club) used to beat sense into foolish people. He was clearly disturbed by these 'doctors'.

Thanks for the information you pass on!
