Actually there are herbal products which soften and break up stones. The best I know of is called, appropriately enough, Stone Breaker, which is formulated by Jon Barron and is recommended for use just prior to a liver flush/detox.

It contains the following herbal ingredients:

Chanca piedra
Hydrangea root
Gravel root
Marshmallow root
Juniper berries
Corn silk
Uva Ursi
Parsley root
Carrot tops
Dandelion leaf
Horsetail
Orange peel
Peppermint
Goldenrod
