MANS FOODS & NATURAL HYGIENE.
"The first observations of the beneficial health effect of a fruit and vegetable diet were made by Sylvester Graham early in the 19th Century. Graham was a Presbyterian minister who was lecturing on temperance in Philadelphia when the city experienced a severe epidemic of cholera, and although the death rate was high, a religious sect called Bible Christians, were unaffected by the mortality. Graham, who had studied anatomy and physiology, found that the Bible Christians, who had migrated from England, abstained from all animal foods (flesh, eggs, milk, cheese), condiments, stimulants, tea, coffee, alcohol and tobacco..........
This observation made a deep and lasting impression on Graham and launched him on a crusade for dietary reform as well as reform of other harmful living habits then in vogue. He lectured far and wide on the need for regular physical exercise, fresh air and well ventilated homes, rest and sleep, sunbathing and emotional control. This pattern of healthful living habits later became known as NATURAL HYGIENE."
