High phosphate level

Sixteen days into hospitalization, suddenly blood shows high phosphate. MD's ordered calcium acetate. First dose was today. Reluctantly agreed to take calcium supplement about ten days ago to avoid being chastised for "refusing medication". Could this have had any effect on blood phosphate level? Thoughts/opinions re: calcium acetate to correct phosphate level. Any other options once discharged?
