Gersons research studies had demonstrated that the blood of cancer patients – especially those in the later stages – was a greenish/yellow, rather than red, due to the lack of iron-carrying oxygen haemoglobin.
Nobel Prize winner Otto Warburg in 1931 won his prize for showing the importance of oxygen in preventing cancer. He showed that not only was oxygen the enemy of the cancer cell, it could actually kill it.
Dr Budwig showed that after treating her late-stage cancer patients with flaxseed oil/cottage cheese daily for several months, the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood increased due to the increased presence of lipoproteins and phosphatides.
In clinical trials she actually showed that tumour size decreased.
One of her greatest discoveries was that the essential fats needed to pass ultimately through cell membranes, and they could only do this by binding to protein.
Her idea was to make them water-soluble by binding them with sulphur and to provide this she used cottage cheese (or quark as the Europeans call it).
The electrons of the fat then bind to the sulphurated protein of the cottage cheese and pass through the cell membranes.
Flaxseeds are generally used very successfully in Alternative cancer treatments for the above reasons, but in a state of wellness there are other "essential" fatty acids that are paramount to health in the body: two of these are EPA's and DHA's.
Flaxseeds and their oils do convert their ALA into DHA and EPA, but apparently in insufficient amounts to have any significant benefit to Brain, Nerve and retina health.
