Re: pets & marriage

I was very frustrated that day, as happens sometimes. No, owning a dog isn't my favorite thing ever, it's true, but we won't dump her. My hubby loves her and she is a good puppy. She is a black labrador retriever and she is 11 months - not a baby puppy but still a puppy. (They say lab's are really in puppy mode for about 5 years!) She's old enough that she's been trained to do a lot of things and she's a good puppy, as much as can be expected, I think.

I also think that many young dogs have it a lot worse as they are stuck in a kennel while their owners are at work. At least she does get out a few times a day and she gets played with in the morning, usually once during the day and in the evening. I just don't like the trait of her being jealous of anyone getting attention but her and the trait that she wants literally attention every moment or she looks mournful and sad. I know these are puppy traits and I don't blame her. The fact remains that I don't like the obligation and constant demands when I'm trying to do work or enjoy anything other than my puppy (including my husband!). I find that endlessly obnoxious. No, dog owning is not for me. It is for my husband (who gives her tons of attention before and after work). If I was ever on my own again for any reason, I'm sure I would never get a dog.

BTW, my conclusion as I mentioned to blues is that this goes under the "suck it up" category of life. I'll suck it up for my dear husband who loves his puppy, and heck, I like her too... most of the time. I feel about her like I do kids: she's fun to play with her but I don't enjoy having to take care of her all day.
