I found research articles on this from the early 1970s.

There have been hundreds of medical/scientific articles on cheilitis, especially from Japan where they seem to take it pretty seriously.

Anyway, cheilitis must have been around as long as human beings have, just like dermatitis and fungal infections and cancer, etc.
