I've broken a fast on meat. I've tried about everything. The most important thing I've found is the AMOUNT of food and not what it is. Tiny amounts of just about anything seem to be OK.
The "pack mentality" here regarding breaking fasts slowly with juices and then fruits and veggies is really just the safest bet and is time-honored. It would be easier to overdo breaking a fast with meat than plant-based food, but I can tell you that I do remember a fast that I broke too quickly with a little too much salad and it wasn't pretty.
