EDTA mainly chelates calcium, magnesium and iron. These are used by microbes to maintain biofilms, so EDTA is very effective at breaking up biofilms.

Biofilms can hold on to various heavy metals, so taking EDTA can release a lot of toxic material very quickly when a chunk of biofilm breaks up.

It can also cause rapid hypocalcemia and stop your heart.

So it's also something to be used with caution.
