white lips when in contact with water was also a stage my lips went through...like the colour of freashly seared steak..but appear normal and have done for coming up to a year now.
from what i have read people CAN and DO recover and so far health proffesionals reason that, although they have not prescribed the magic cure.. they consider a change of some sorts has had to have happened to and by the individual for the boat to be turned around into healthier waters...
this change could be ANYTHING..new love affair with a health concious pilates instructor, healing of a family rift so your appetites back..cutting out buckets of coffee all together to sip moderate amounts of herbal tea instead, taking up building boats from matchsticks that puts a spark back into your life, whatever...so it's not surprising the cure remains elusive and not concrete, bagged, gift wrapped and presented with a ribbon bow! There are, however, egs here where individuals have recovered following a healthy regime..patience is key..however, problems have apparently resurfaced when people fall back into old bad habits regarding diets and when experiencing stress.
surgery is a big step..how do you know that the short term mood elevator riding on the crest of hope...and stress relief following a surgery was what actually made the difference and short term recovery and not through the surgical knife itself? If it came back after surgery...then the problem isn't just at the lips is it?!
Why is it also that vitamin B ( look up the reasons for vitamin B deficiency ) and anti depressants has resolved the problem in people..both these are plaster jobs and not the solution to deeper emotional luggage.. which somatic healing techniques for eg, might help people long term..(these are techniques which there are many to choose from that register and acknowledge the body-mind link with illness) aswell as other healthy regimes that previous people who have recovered from commited to..and have worked resulting in better health and consequently lips..
Sad and of particular note is the rise of eating disorders amongst teenagers in the west which is horrendous..the damage they do to their bodies and the obvious pressure and stress they are enduring too..If there is a skew of stastics towards youngish people suffering from this type of disorder ..it would be something to watch out for and to consider.
