Gut Probiotics need fiber food known as Prebiotics

Gut Probiotics need fiber food known as Prebiotics

QUOTE “I noticed that the probiotic I've been taking for a few weeks includes NutraFlora (short-chain fructooligosaccharides) 210mg. This seems like it might be a bad thing. It's Primadophilus Optima which seems to be decent so far; however, I'm questioning the addition of this ingredient. Does anyone know anything about this? Any probiotics to recommend? Every time I go to buy a new one I am overwhelmed and get such conflicting information.”

!!A MetaMetrix stool analysis will give you a status on the numbers of different gut flora including Lactobacillus and Bifido species. Then you can decide which ones need more of their own kind. Most probiotics have more Lactobacillus than Bifid. In my case, I have adequate Lactobacillus and low Bifido.
I am now using Source Natural Bifidyn and Jarrow Bifidus Balance plus FOS. FOS is the fiber that probiotics eat—but Bifido may like galactose better.
The article below is about an experiment about making prebiotic fiber supplement from potatoes.
Skip down to about the last ten lines to see this excerpt:
"When fermented in vitro by microbial communities derived from fecal samples from three healthy human volunteers,
both of the solubilized fiber fractions were more bifidogenic than fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS).
Notably the fibers having molecular masses of >100 kDa
selectively increased the densities of Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. 2-3 times more than FOS."

Note: results and conclusions are usually listed last in abstract reports.
