Re: protopic long term use

As I've noted here and on the wiki, the effects of long-term use of Protopic (tacrolimus) is untested and unknown.

In the case of peeling lips, I found several sufferers who reported that it did not help their condition in the long run, such as #74049, SpiffyOne, j123 and meandyou, and two sufferers that reported on negative effects.

One user, alesiom11, reported an initial burning sensation, and a slight expansion of the area where the lips peeled; another user, hallow, reporting an increase in the rate of peeling after using Protopic.

The infamous journal article that started it all:

Exfoliative cheilitis successfully treated with topical tacrolimus

I wrote to the doctor who authored the study to see if there was ever follow-up about long-term effects of the tacrolimus ointment. Will let you know if and when I hear back.

Peace,
C.S.
