root canals

If you go to a dentist that is mercury free and a member of IAOMT can root canals be done correctly. I am in the process of getting my mercury fillings replaced. I found a dentist in the city that doesn't believe in pulling a tooth. If I replace some of my mercury fillings, I know they will need a root canal. Are all root canals bad or should a tooth just be pulled instead of a root canal? I need input before I meet with her. I know she is mercury free but believes in root canals. Is she a good dentist choice?
