For those w/trouble drinking their OJ :)


Hi everyone, I posted this in the Raw Veg. Forum and thought it might interest others here:

It’s also concerned me that some OJ fasters have trouble with the acid from the orange after a certain amount of days (those that have posted about their sensitive tooth nerve pain). This problem was briefly addressed in the excerpt from the chapter on Organic Acids provided from the link. The author mentions that very rarely will someone be unable to oxidize the acid from the fruit and it will cause much discomfort.

I wonder if this could be caused from eating oranges that haven’t been fully ripened or maybe it’s only a problem to those who don’t have access to fresh, fully ripened oranges from the tree.

The author of “The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health,” Christopher Vasey N.D., mentions this problem only occuring in some individuals who cannot properly oxidize the weak acids from oranges and other acid foods. He doesn’t really explain WHY it may be that some cannot handle these acids better than others.

p.60

ACID FOODS

“This group consists of foods whose alkalizing or acidifying effect depends on the metabolic capacities of the person who eats tem. Their classification is therefore not based upon their physical effect (because that cannot be defined in advance) but on their basic nature, which is acid.
These foods contain a good deal of acid, hence their taste. The acids in them are weak, however, which means for people capable of metabolizing them properly by easily oxidizing them, they are transformed into alkaline elements and therefore contribute to the alkalization of the body. But for people whose metabolisms cannot handle acids proplerly, the large quantity of acids contained in these foods is not oxidized, and they thus will have an acidifying effect.
The primary acid foods are fruits, whey, and vinegar.

• Whey, yogurt, curds, kefir, small curd cottage cheese
• Unripe frits (the less ripe a fruit, the higher its acid content)
• Acid fruits: berries (red and black currants, raspberries, strawberries); citrus fruits (lemons, grapefruit, tangerines, oranges); certain varieties of apples (Winesap), cherries (Morello), plums, apricots
• Sweet fruits (especially when eaten in excess), melon, watermelon
• Acid vegetables: tomato, rhubarb, sorrel, watercress
• Sauerkraut, vegetables that have been lactofermented (cultured with Lactobacillus)
• Fruit juices, lemon juice (in salad dressing)
• Honey
• Vinegar”

(I just want to add that the acid foods are very different from acidifying foods that would include meat, eggs, grains, white sugar, coffee, etc.)

Chapter 1 p.10:

“Weak acids are primarily of plant origin (carbohydrates and vegetable protein), except for those coming from yogurt and whey, which are of animal origin. Weak acids include citric, oxalic, pyruvic, and acetylsalicylic acids. Weak acids are also called volatile acids, because once they have been oxidized they are eliminated by the lungs in the form of vapors and gases, both as breath moisture and as carbon dioxide (CO2). Their elimination is relatively easy, and there are no limits on the quantity that can be expelled from the body by the kidneys, unlike nonvolatile strong acids. When the body needs to increase the elimination of volatile acids it does so simply by increasing the rate of respiration. The amount of volatile acids that can be eliminated is limited only by how fast and how deeply a person is able to breathe.”

Ch. 1 p. 20:

“There is a special category of individuals, however, who are sick not only because of inadequate lifestyle and an excessive intake of acids. They also suffer from a metabolic weakness that is particularly susceptible to acids.”

p. 21 “For such people, acids are poorly oxidized, if at all, and these substances remain in the body without releasing the alkaline substance with which they are combined. In people with this metabolic weakness, foods that would normally contribute a high quota of alkaline substances instead have the effect of acidifying the internal enviroment. The same food can have an entirely different effect depending on the body of the person who ingests it. This is why some dietitians declare that lemon is an alkalizing food while others claim it is acidifying. Both are correct. The error lies in not determining whether the physical constitution of the person eating that kind of food has an inherent metabolic weakness toward acids.”

This quote may concern those who have fasted on fruit juices or OJ for a certain amount of days (as did I):

“Alkaline minerals are primarily located in the pulp and remain there when the fruits are pressed for juice. Since they are not present in the juice, they cannot neutralize its acidity. (This is, of course, not the case for juices that contain pulverized pulp.)” (p. 61)

Maybe for those who experience pain or discomfort on the OJ fast could try eating whole oranges instead of the juice.

Ch. 2 p. 45

TEST 6: DETECTING INABILITY TO METABOLIZE ACIDS

“The purpose of this “challenge” test is not to make you sick, but simply to confirm or rule out the possibility that you have a deficiency in metabolizing acids. If you do, a more significant intake of acids should cause joint pains to intensify, red blotches on the skin to grow larger, fatigue to become more noticeable, and nervousness, burning urination, itching, and so forth to increase.
This test involves consuming generous helpings of fresh fruit, fruit juices, yogurts, whey products, and so forth for one or two days. This is long enough to bring about noticeable aggravation of symptoms. If you are extremely sensitive, the negative effects of acids may manifest as quickly as a half-hour to an hour after consumption. You will experience a general sense of feeling unwell and a sudden onset of fatigue, and your teeth may feel on edge in response to the aggressive acids.”
p. 18

ILLNESSES CAUSED BY ACIDIFICATION

“Acidification engenders many afflictions that manifest in various ways. An individual suffering from excessive acid will not contract them all, only those that take advantage of the person’s specific physiological weaknesses. Weak points are determined by temperament, heredity, accidents, lifestyle, and sometimes profession. With some people it is primarily the skin or respiratory system that is afflicted; with others it is the nerves or teeth, the gums, the eyes, or the spinal column.
Besides the illnesses listed above, acidification of the internal enviroment leads to great fatigue, even in the absence of any physical or mental effort. Generally the person afflicted no longer has any drive or enthusiasm, tires quickly, and takes a long time to recover from exertion. The individual tends to be touchy and irritable, to worry too much, and to sleep poorly, and may even become depressed. The noxiious effect of acids on the nerves is easily explained: minerals like magnesium, calcim, and potassium that the nervous system needs to function properly are precisely the alkaline minerals the body takes away to neutralize acids.”

I posted this information in attempt to help those who are having trouble with their juice fasting after doing some of my summer reading. Happy 1st Day of Summer MH and the rest of Curezone, by the way! I just wanted to help those who are/were unable to juice fast understand why they may be having difficulties.
