Diatomaceous earth has been used in animal husbandry for many years. First recorded discovered 1838. It has many industrial uses and long used as an insecticide and then parasites in sheep. No time line was found for animals, but I saw a reported use in 2002 for parasites by humans.
The dramatic flood of whole body health reports spurred its use as the word spread. Now people are buying it by the 40 and 50 pound bags to give to family and friends.
