Try to think of dehydration as a decrease in sodium instead of a decrease in water. When you are dehydrated, drinking excess water can make you more dehydrated. Increasing sodium levels will help you retain water as water and sodium stay together. You eat sodium, you retain water. You drink a lot of water, you lose a lot of sodium.
