Have you looked at Dr Mobey's research in reversing kidney damage using a ketogenic diet of 8% protein, 5% carbs and 87% fat?
The diet was able to normalize blood sugar in one week and reverse the proteinuria after a couple months and the results stayed after stopping the diet.
Another thing that is helpful for those in 3-5th stage renal failure is BCAA (Branch Chained Amino Acids).
It helps boost erythropoeitin to the bone marrow to create more blood when the kidneys are no longer able to.
High protein can bypass the kidney erythropoeitin process, but it will raise (BUN) blood urea nitrogen too high, so adding the BCAA's and doing minimum protein may help the kidneys.
BCAA's will increase albumin and hemoglobin and after 6 months and stopping the BCAA's, it continues to produce the good nutritional status.
I still don't know the effects of high dose iodine on the kidneys.
