Probiotics Counter Gluten Sensitivity

Holiday Treats & Cheats

A daily dose of probiotics can help the body in many ways. The literature on the benefits of probiotics is very impressive.
The Holiday time is especially a good time to take probiotics before eating, or even with meals, as probiotics help to decrease inflammation and can protect against the effects of gluten-sensitivity that many people deal with.

Gluten is known to increase the permeability of the gut lining, aka "leaky gut". This leads to transportation of pro-inflammatory agents into the blood. Probiotics have just the opposite effect and closes up the gut wall, as this study shows - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24483336.

While this study focuses on only one strain, other strains have also been shown to produce the same results.

So, if you're going to enjoy some Holiday treats, take probiotics at the same time to minimize the inflammatory effects of gluten.

Now, a good question is, does candida's Hyphal Wall Protein (HWP-1), which is identical to the gluten protein, stimulate the same response as gluten?
