Vitamin A
Hi Susie! :)
I'm so glad the cranberry juice helped! That's great! :)
Cod liver oil is one of the best sources of Vitamin A. In my readings of what is nutritionally important, Vitamin A tops the list of vitamins. the omega 3 and 5 fatty acids are also important, but you can get these from other oils. Cod liver oil is the only one that is very high in A and D.
Our culture gets about a third of what "primitive" cultures get, and they made SURE to eat plenty of vitamin A sources, and even had/have rituals/traditions designed to make sure that women about to marry or conceive get certain foods before the rest of the tribe, because they know that that is how the tribe will stay healthy and prevent birth defects.
Interestingly enough, the rate of deaths by heart attack are linked to the nutrition and use of butter. as the use and nutrition in butter goes down (butter from spring-grass fed cows is more nutritious) death by heart attack goes up. There's a month-by-month correlation. Moreover, as our diets switched from butter to margarine, heart attack deaths and birth defects went up.
As to the weight issue, well, I'm 5'2" and weigh about 112-114 pounds, altho I'm just a size 4 petite in slacks. So I would guess you could stand to gain a little weight, especially if you're smaller than a size 4. I don't go by the standardized weight charts, I've never found them to be very accurate. A combo of height, weight and size is more accurate.
