Calorie question


My question is regarding metabolism...
I understand the theory behind the diet and it makes perfect sense. Right now I am doing a protein shake diet where I take in about 1000 cals a day, each shake is about 150 cals... and yes of course, my concern is that this low cal intake will put me into starvation mode.
However, if I am taking in a shake every 3 hours, will this keep my metabolism going strong, even though the total cals are lower than recommended?
