I think that we need to understand that temptation is not a sin. Christ was tempted 40 days, but overcame them by the word of God. IF you can imagine for a moment how all sin begins we can then "overcome" through the power of Christ. Temptation is a thought, the seed is planted and as we dwell upon this thought it grows, finally we act upon it and it becomes SIN. If we then stop it as a thought before it has a chance to grow we can gain or overcome the victory. Christ did this simply by saying "It is written". This is one reason we need to spend time in the word of God daily. Sin is the thing that separated us from God, for the act of sinning is to put something between you and God. James said it best " 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you."
