A really good remedy for constipation is magnesium. It's not expensive, available everywhere, and it works. From everything I've read, magnesium doesn't build up in your body, isn't addictive and is a good thing for your body. However, I think once you get everything moving, the best long-term remedy to constipation is through diet. Eat at least one piece of fruit every day, pears are great, but really anything. Another remedy: if you're a cereal eater, sprinkle a tablespoon of flax seed on top of your cereal. If you've read about flax seed, you know you can't get the Omega-3's out of a whole flax seed (they must be ground), but when moistened, flax seeds get slippery and help your body fix the consitipation trouble -- they taste good in cereal, too! And, of course, drink lots of water.
