Getting a reduced pair prescription for computer use/book reading is one of the best things you can do to relieve strain on your vision. One of the problems is that when you get a distance prescripion that's supposed to let you see out 100's of yards. But you don't need that powerful lenses to see two feet in front of you.

As far as the bates method, check out grousp.yahoo.com and look for the "batesmethod" group. There's lots of info there to get you started.
