You hit on a good point

Irresponsible breeding is creating something approaching a genetic disaster in our dogs. I've lost count of the number of times someone will post on a canine health forum about some desire to breed their dog, or they need advice for breeding. They know nothing about the genetic background of the parents, and/or have little knowledge on how to breed responsibly. Meanwhile our shelters are overflowing.

The local shelter in my area is trying, but they still have a ways to go in both health and other practices. The facilities seem adequate. I can credit them with having an adoption process that is not cumbersome. Some of the rescue groups have adoptions forms that would put the FBI to shame. The adoption rate for the state of NC is if I remember correctly about 62%. It's sad.
