Here's are a few paragraphs from Bharat Savur's article on The Hindu Business Online
..."When Dr Karsch examined the gargled milk-white oil under a microscope with 600 magnification, he saw live organisms swimming in it. It's poisonous, so never swallow it, he warns. These poisons are bacteria-embryos, which, if not eliminated, cause diseases. Apparently, Dr Karsch cured his own chronic blood disease and 15-year-old arthritis.
The first sign of improvement is in the teeth-they become firm and white, he says. Other healing indications: fresh, relaxed feeling on waking up, disappearing dark pouches below the eyes, anew appetite and energy, better memory and deep sleep.
Dr Karsch swears by the mouth oil-wash for anything from organ-disorders, skin-diseases, menstrual problems, paralysis to every ache and it is in the human anatomy. You can gargle even when you have fever, he says, adding, it takes anything from two days to a year to cure a disease.
And if these claims sound exaggerated, he told a conference of Ukrainian cancer specialists, try out the process yourself.
Interestingly, Ayurveda advises oil gargling "to purify the taste-buds and the entire system", as explained by Dr Deepak Chopra in Perfect Health. According to this life science, the tongue is mapped by organ-locations — that is, each section of the tongue is connected to the kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine.
Thus, an oil-mouth-massage soothes and stimulates the key meridians where taste meets organ. Simultaneously, as in any skin-massage, the inner skin and lining of the mouth, palate and tongue become warm and supple and the lubrication prevents dryness (the vatic effect).
In modern dietetics too, dryness is discussed. For example, lack of Vitamin A (retinal) causes the outer lining of the eyeball to dry and wrinkle, and affects vision.
And as any dietician would tell you, all oils contain 960 micrograms of vitamin A per 10 gm (the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A per adult is 600 micrograms). So, it's possible that oil gargling helps in reaching the required retinal to the eyeballs and keeps them elastic and smooth.
Likewise, the Ayurvedic `purification of taste-buds' also has its equivalent in dietetics as `antioxidants'. Oxidation literally means `the putrefaction of body-tissues'.
And oil-soluble vitamins, A, C, D, and E are antioxidants that protect and prevent the decaying process and help maintain the integral functioning of cell membranes. That's why, many people are ingesting vitamin E pills to stem `aging' (oxidation). "

11/8/2006: Laura from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia writes, "I wanted to comment that the usage of the word "gargle" on your Oil Pulling page is a tad alarming given the warning NOT to gargle in the throat near the end of the instructions. It seems Dr. Karsch used it as well. I have never heard or used the word "gargle" unless it meant using the throat, so it is a tad misleading for the unsuspecting or the casual reader. Perhaps the alert could be placed at the beginning of the article to clarify the usage of the word and for safety's sake. Thank you for your time."

OIL PULLING INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: These are instructions from India in which only 2 types of oil can be used. However, as you will read below in our Reader Feedback section, people are experimenting with different oils, adding anti-bacterial and anti-viral oil essences. Soon we might have a purist vs. renegade oil pulling battle!
INSTRUCTIONS: First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it's still yellow, you haven't done it long enough.
You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.
Follow with 2 - 3 glasses of water.
DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL.
It now contains parasites and bacteria!
DO NOT GARGLE IN THE THROAT.
THE OIL IS MEANT TO BE SWISHED IN THE MOUTH ONLY.
DO IT SLOWLY.
HOW IT WORKS:
The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.
Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.
Only sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results.
If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects. Your body is healing.

I used to get sleep only at 5am and now i sleep by maximum 10.30. So far I have benefited gums cure/dark circles and good night sleep. Therefore I recommend to all. It is win win situation any which way. No side effects, cheaper remedy and simple too."
2/7/2007: Bob from Northridge, CA writes, "I was close to twenty years allergic to alcohol. I've been using Olive oil Sunflower oil and Sesame oil for about a month and a half to get rid of Psoriasis it did not help at all-what it did was cure my allergy to alcohol-that's for now."
2/5/2007: Liz from Bangalore, India writes, "Hi, I've been oil pulling with sesame oil for over 2 months and it has helped me with my sinus condition, energy level, and to get past the flu season while everyone else got it. (Which is a surprise because I'm the first to catch a bug). But the thing is I stopped a few weeks ago, and I've developed allergies, itchy skin with welts and now I have discovered a swelling, in my breast. While my doctor says it can wait for 2 weeks before getting checked, I was wondering if there's any connection between my new conditions and the oil pulling. I am a little concerned, I'm not sure if I should continue or stop. I have mercury filling that actually chipped soon after I got it done (over 5 years ago) "
2/4/2007: Gracie from Pasadena, CA writes, "I went to health food store twice yesterday looking for correct oil; the only cold pressed oil that they had was olive. I could hardly sleep with excitement of my first oil pulling... After 2 minutes I had to spit out oil because of mucus in throat. Yellow. Again for maybe 3 minutes I swished oil with mucus in throat, spitting out white substance. Another try for about 2-3 minutes, I spit out white substance and coughted up 2 globs of white thick mucus. Dry heaving and wanting to vomit over toilet bowl. I could have swished the oil around for the full time but for the draining mucus in throat. It was not unpleasant having the oil in my mouth at all as I was using a nice fine olive oil. I'll continue tomorrow morning and trust that with time I'll be able to manage 20 minutes. In the meantime, I am most grateful for this information."
2/3/2007: Bob from Northridge, CA writes, "After using it for a month I did feel better and I was spared the flu when all around me were sick, however it didn't cure my Psoriasis is there something- I've had it for a few years."
2/3/2007: Darla from Tomball, TX writes, "I read about oil pulling on your site, we were looking up benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar, tried the pulling two days ago because everyone at work is getting sick. The first morning I did it, I could tell immediately during and after it was really helping to bring up the phlegm, I was alot more clear. Today was the second day and I am 100% clear and feel somewhat more energetic. I am using expeller pressed organic sesame seed oil for 15-20 mins each morning while bathing. I think its going to be great -- I will let you all know."
1/26/2007: Vaidvij from Bangalore, India writes, "Oil Pulling Therapy seems to work well in clearing the toxins of the body. I have my bad tooth problem cured and still continuing the therapy. Overall effects are amusing and very much satisfactory."
1/26/2007: Tunesia from Louisville, KY writes, I''ve been oil pulling now for 3 mths with olive oil with amazing results. I used to wake up with joint soreness every morning. That ended after the first day for me and I also noticed that I sleep great and can get right out of the bed and function in the morning. my teeth are whiter, and skin is clear. I never had a problem with Arthritis in my hands but pulling brought it to the surface and got rid of it I ached for two weeks and it's gone and hasn't been back. I quickly advised my family to start and now 4 of them are with favorable results. It definately does get worse before getting better, but stick with it. My Aunt is in her worsening stages of her ailments but looking forward to getting better."
1/11/2007: Kelli from Silver City, NM writes, "Sesame oil 20 minute pulling with a teaspoon has cured headaches, and raised energy levels. I had OP sent to me in an email and gave it to my mom who is in her early 60's. She called me one morning and said that she woke up with a terrible headache, as she was going to the medicine cabinet she stopped and thought about trying the OP, she said that she sat down and swished for 20 min and before the time was up her headache was completely gone. Also she lives a ways out of town and rarely comes down without goog reason, she has been useing OP for over a week and has gone out with friends and made shopping trips. This may not sound like much, but to me I have my mom back, she is happier and more youthful than she has been in years. It is also helping with age spots she has recently gotten, they are fading at a visual rate. I highly recommend this to anyone who has tried healing on the outside, but may have negleted the inside. She also has said that her mouth feels fresher than ever. I started yesturday and look forward to any results as they seem to differ with different people."
1/11/2007: Lorelei from Utah writes, "After more than 2 months of oil pulling, I am ready to comment. I wanted to make sure I gave it enough time to see what would happen.
First, do NOT use unrefined oil! That was a big mistake! I spent the whole day trying not to barf. I used refined sesame oil after that. I swish for 10 mins, rinse, and swish for another 10 mins, then rinse with baking soda and salt in water (about a half tsp each in a few ounces), then rinse with just water. I only have the patience to do it once a day.
Within a few days, my teeth were white! This is amazing, because despite not drinking coffee, tea, cola, etc, my teeth stain very easily. They are also mostly plaque-free. My mouth is very healthy overall. Gums look healthier. I haven't had any canker sores either. I can't say that this has helped any other problems though. Still tired and have bags under my eyes. Still had an outbreak of cold sores. Still have psoriasis. Still have terrible periods. Still have dry feet! It has possibly kept me from catching my kids' myraid colds, etc. But that could also be due to cold(ish showers), echinacea, apple cider vinegar, or any other healthy thing I have started recently! I would recommend oil pulling though, just for mouth health alone."
1/4/2007: Nancy from Winnsboro, TX writes, "oil pulling- began about 1st week of October. My sleep better, skin is getting softer, less mood swings, lots of laughter, better outlook on life, lost weight. I used sesame oil, some days with sunflower, now have been using coconut oil and seem to have less problems with swallowing this oil than the others. My husband has been doing this as well and is seeing lots of areas of improvment- he's a disabled combat veteran, full of agent orange-we both plan on continuing to OP and keep a record of improvements while we keep up our nutrient dense eating choices as well."
1/4/2007: Jane from London writes, "I been oil pulling for a month. I feel good, skin looks better, sleep better more engery. the one down side I have been getting a swollen gland causing a bit of discomfort. My ear has been blocked for months cause this be a herx. I have recently added peppermint to the oil which is either oliver or sunflower oil. Thanks for your feedback."
1/3/2007: Sweet from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, West Indies writes, "Dear EARTH CLINIC, Thank you for the information you share on your site. THANK YOU! I have been annoyed with Acne for over 5 years. I will be 24 this month. It is most frustrating when I try everything (with caution) that others recommend that has worked to reduce Acne for them, but no positive results for me. October 14, 2006 I did a search online for a "natural Acne cure". I was amazed at all the natural remedies on your site. I was eating while reading about Oil Pulling, and felt an urgency to try it. I anxiously awaited a 5-hour period and finallly tried Oil Pulling for the first time, with the Sesame Oil from the kitchen. Needless to say, not a morning passes without me working this remedy. The first thing I noticed was the lack of a morning breath, and a continuous fresh breath throughout the day :-) Next, people started commenting on my 'bright smile'. I live in Trinidad (republic of Trinidad & Tobago) and usually have the worst sinus problems in November & December, yet the dreaded period passed without a sneeze or sniffle! I have more energy throughout the day, and it seems as though each day has an extra 2 hours or so. Last but not least, I still have new acne popping up, however, strangely, my face is noticeably smoother and cleaner, despite the marks from years of acne war. I have been visiting this site ever since October last, and have been recommending others to do the same. Oh, and my entire family and some friends have also started; I will let you know how it works for them. Thank you. **Sweet**"
1/2/2007: Diane from Philadelphia, PA writes, "I have been oil pulling two times a day for about a month now and notice a vast improvement in my gums. I have had 2 root canals and at my last dental visit, they wanted to do a 3rd root canal to correct the previous two. Needless to say, I had severe gum pain and an abscess that caused me excrutiating pain. My jaw would swell up to the size of chipmuck's. I was in constant pain. I started oil pulling with sunflower oil and notice that my pain had decreased in intensity by day 3. Within 7 days, I had no pain and my abscess was completely gone. I ran out of sunflower oil and am now using extra virgin coconut oil. My gums are a healthy pink--they are no longer receding. I had a loosened tooth that really needed to be pulled but the gums have tightened around the tooth and it is no longer loose. My skin feels softer and I'm no longer plagued with earaches. I tried oil pulling with Olive-Oil but could not stand the taste. Once I finish up my coconut oil, I will go back to sunflower (it is a better tasting oil)."
12/28/2006: Renuka from Jordan writes, "I learnt about oil pulling when I came across your wonderful site accidently. What a lucky accident! I've been oil pulling with sunflower oil, twice a day, for about twenty days now and my gums have almost completely stopped bleeding (they had been bleeding for years) and they feel firm and healthy. My teeth are cleaner and whiter. I suffered daily from indigestion problems and gases in the past. But now the stomach rumblings have reduced significantly and I don't feel bloated after a meal. The best result of OP however, is that in just twenty days I've lost about 4 lbs. I have no appetite for junk food anymore and feel full after a moderate meal - no more second and third helpings like before. All in all, I'm very happy with the initial result and hope to make OP a twice-daily habit for life. Just one question however: Why should one OP on an empty stomach only? What if I've had a meal an hour or two before? I wish I could have an answer to this, because with my busy schedule, my meal times are not very regular."
Earth Clinic responds: Renuka, we will post Ted's response in the Q&A section below when we hear back from him.
