In this book by Dr. Starr, he say that MOST thyroid conditions do not show up in blood tests, and they are at epidemic proportions. He says the reason we are living longer these days is that people with thyroid problems used to die off young due to infections...but now we have medicines that keep them alive...so they survive long enough to develope heart disease and diabetes - which are long term results of poor thyroid function. The best way to test is to take your temperature in the morning before you get out of bed. If it is low (I think the number is under 97.6 or so) chances are you are low thyroid. Then check your symptoms. One of the big ones is constant infection.... there are soooo many symptoms. The thyroid is the master gland of the body. It is the controlling factor for the metabolism of the entire body. The rest of your hormones can not function properly if it does not, and so it has a profound effect on every aspect of your life. (This is almost a direct quote from Dr. Starr).
You may have some of the symptons, many of them...or none. Some of them are constant infections, fatigue, anxiety, constipation, skin problems, feeling cold all the time, depression, loss of concentration, obesity, chronic pain, headaches, ....sexual problems - all kinds -, and in the long term, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and dementia including Alzheimers.
There are two kinds of thyroid disorders....one where you either produce to many or to few hormones...the one that shows up in blood tests....and Type 2, the kind where you make the hormones OK, but your body does not use them properly. This is the most common variety, and it does not show up in blood work.
This is fascinating stuff. So many problems...one solution? Could this be? You should read his book. He is an MD, and toots taking hormones...but Thyroid Throu is an herbal product from China, and they say they can fix the thyroid so that is not necessary to take hormones. The only thyroid that can't be fixed is the one that has been removed or killed with radiation (they do that sort of thing, you know...)
