the fact of the matter is the iraq is an articifical construction of the british empire, designed in such a way as to gain access to as much oil as possible for that empire. left to themselves, those two factions (sunnis / shiites) would never have decided to forge a union under a unified country. so we are essentially inheriting the nightmare that england created. i find it interesting england never cared a whit about that region till oil was found. then guess what?? they determined the peoples there needed to be "liberated" from their horrible oppressors and so they galantly sent in their troops to do the job.
the english troops stayed there, "liberating" the populace of iraq for a number of years, with iraqis continually taking shots at them and the english suffering casualties. finally the occupation got so unpopular at home, they were forced to withdraw their troops. gee! sound familiar?
the lies governments use to start wars are all recycled over and over, nothing new under the sun as S said.
