Try going to the Weston A. Price website and looking at the articles they have posted on nutrition during pregnancy. If you eat nutrient-dense foods like high-quality fats and proteins, your body will use those to support your nursing and your pregnancy. If you eat a lot of carbs, your body will store them as fat but won't get the nutrients it needs to support both of your babies. This time around is especially important because you have not had a "replenishment" period to regain nutrients lost during your first pregnancy and nursing since.

What are high-quality fats and proteins? Meats, especially organ meats. Eggs. cod-liver oil. Flax seed oil. Fish (look for fish with a low incidence of mercury).

I gained about 70 pounds during my pregnancy, following the advice of a great prenatal nutrition specialist, Dr. Barbara Luke. (She is at Michigan and has a couple of good books on prenatal nutrition.) Her experience is that women do not get enough protein in pregnancy and as a result, we are seeing an epidemic of premature births because the babies are literally starving in there! I see this a lot with other twins mothers I meet -- invariably, they go into labor at 34 weeks or so and had no idea about the high levels of protein needed to feed the growing babies.

Dr. Luke's book has a chart on how much weight one should gain based on current weight, etc.

If I were you I'd "prioritize" my eating and work down the food pyramid. Fats first. Animal proteins next. As many fruits and vegetables as you want. Grains last (especially processed carbs like pasta and bread.)

One thing I did was to eat a lot of raw eggs. Unpalatable unless you put them in a smoothie, but great nutrient-wise, and if you can get local eggs, safe. I remember reading on the Weston A. Price site about Chinese women who eat as many eggs as possible during pregnancy.

Another thing to do is to start taking cod-liver oil. Coconut oil is a great addition to diet, too, and contains lauric acid (also found in breast milk) which has a weight-normalizing effect. Flax-seed oil is high in lignans and Omega-3s. All of these fats are important to prenatal brain development.

Finally, as I mentioned in another post, make sure your prenatals include iodine. I have been reading a lot about Iodine and pregnancy and am having great regret that I did not know about adequate supplementation during pregnancy and nursing. It's directly related to IQ, and deficiency is associated with ADD, for starters.

Regarding the home birth/VBAC issue. I have so many friends who have had great home-birth experiences. A couple who ended up needing to go to the hospital, and who were glad they did. I think the key is to keep an open mind about accepting help, but to trust that God's going to bring that baby into this world safely no matter where it happens!
