I smoked for 37 years before I finally quit. The number of times I tried to quit is in the hundreds, maybe a thousand or more times. None of the normal crutches worked for me. Not chewing gum, candy, patches. Nothing. Nada. My wife and I both were heavy smokers and we both talked about quitting together. We made a bet as to who could go the longest without a cigarette. That was Dec 16, 2001. Bet is still on. Stale smoke stinks, but a fresh smell of cigarette or cigar still smells good. That is how powerful the addiction to the chemicals was/is. At least the mad craving left me after a week or so.
Maybe you can find a friend to compete with. It is the only thing that ever worked for me. By the way, I was 59 when I quit.
