I don't think its necessary to have adverse symptoms for it to work, it's just that it rarely happens like that unless you use very low doses.
I always took antioxidants well separate and since individual responses vary a great deal it's hard to tell if it makes a difference and to what extent.
I wouldn't take it for a long time with no antioxidants at all, and though the body produces it's own, you may well start to feel adverse effects when these get depleted
