I would argue that you cannot compare hair and nails to skin; they constantly grow and shed, and although skin sheds, it is not normal for it to peel on the lips.. stroking your hair, or cutting your nails is not going to change the course of how it functions, because the manner in which the hair and nails can be trimmed is normal - its inherent purpose. Picking at the lips, like picking at wound, is abnormal to the function of the skin, therefore if it is constantly done, than the skin is going to have an adverse reaction.
