My EC was caused by also triggered by a strong medicine (Aldara) prescribed in an incorrect dosage. I have read several posts from peeps who have taken Acutane in the past and now suffer from EC. I must say I do have a bitter/acidic/metallic taste in my saliva. I have ph test strips and I do test on the acidic side but not way acidic....definitely need to be more alkaline, I think. As far as ”following” Montreal’s diet I have been pretty darn close with the exception of substituting fresh wild caught tuna a couple of times for Salmon. I Drink 7-8 glasses of water a day, exercise, etc.etc. I also have a breath ”issue” but was told it was caused by Esophageal Diverticulitis. So many ideas and thoughts to consider.......   [End]

I have completed 2 weeks of Montreal’s ”eating program”. I have followed his original very restrictive diet, I exercise (fast walk at least 5 days a week 1.5 miles), a try to keep stress at a minimum and drink 7-8 glasses of water/day. I do yoga using wiifit, as well. Week 1 - no improvement Week 2 - no improvement I tend to peel a little every day with some days what I call ”major peels”...but it’s random. I do have EC and the only lip moisturizer I have successfully used is Badger Organic lip balm. It comes in tins and is soft to the touch. You can order it online @ badgerbalm.com, but it might be easier to try Blistex first. It’s sort of a process of elimination. What works for one may or may not work for another.   [End]

SLS is definitely not good to have in toothpaste (as well as shampoos,etc) I have never had cold sores involved with my EC, but I think we all agree it is different for each of us and what works for one may or may not work for another. I can only share my experience. I had 2 ”punch biopsies” when I first contracted EC almost 4 years ago. The Dermatologist sent them away for analysis and whatever he was looking for i.e. cancer, was not found.....nor was a diagnosis. I was left with 2 white spots where the biopsies were done and my skin peels in the biopsy area just as the rest of my lips do. I will say the area was greatly traumatized at the time of the biopsies but my scabs were so thick and painful then. Now the area looks more like the rest of my lips.   [End]

I agree that some have had this for far longer than I have, but after reading many posts (the more recent ones) it seems it affects everyone somewhat differently and medications that help one person may not be so helpful to another. I see this forum as a platform for expressing thoughts, concerns, ideas and to carry on an exchange with people who understand on some level. I see somewhat of a pattern for some of us who have reacted to strong drugs. Perhaps our systems just were so overloaded and EC is the result. Yes, I agree that the thinning of my ”peels” probably has to do with my use of the steroid ointment but I can function in society without large thick ugly scabs which were embarrassing and sooooo painful when they came off. I use the least amount I can and apply it very gently with the wide end of a flat toothpick. Now the skin under my ”peels” is not as raw and painful though it starts some crusting soon after (that’s where the Badger balm is so helpful).
