I THINK THE BEST WAY I CAN INTRODUCE MYSELF TO THE READERS, IS TO SHOW THEM A COPY OF A LETTER I WROTE IN NOVEMBER, 2004
To Whom It May Concern,
Since I'm not exactly sure who should be reading this e-mail I decided it probably should be read by any and all administrative and all Corporate Executive Officers that deal with the production and sales of the drug VIOXX. I especially want those in charge of stocks and stockholders to pass this on because it will affect them! Merck is a huge corporation, so I must make sure that copies of this letter will reach all parties concerned.
Copies will be distributed to the Justice Department, to the Senate Select Committee. My Senators and major Newspapers throughout the country and all television news organizations. ABC, NBC, CBS (including 60 minutes) will have access to this letter. The FDA is just as responsible as Merck and it will be noted. This action is necessary to get the truth out to physicians, pharmacies, and patients. There is already litigation ongoing with this story; a story the entire country should hear; perhaps the entire western world.For those who has gone through this I tell my story. My story is only ONE IN THOUSANDS AND IT NEEDS ATTENTION NOW. I OFFER MY VOICE TO ALL THOSE WHO CAN'T.
September 14th 2004, almost 18 months to the day that my husband started taking vioxx, he suffered a massive stroke. Medically called an acute cerebral vascular accident (CVA) His right side was paralyzed, he couldn't talk or swallow. Because he couldn't swallow he could aspirate and get pneumonia from
his own saliva or he could choke to death. At first he was feed with a nasal gastric tube, later it was necessary to operate and put a feeding tube into his stomach. He had to be suctioned several times a day to prevent choking and pneumonia.
For thirty-two days I sat at his bedside night and day. I only went home three times for a short time during those thirty-two days. The stroke had occluded his right carotid artery 100%. Surgery was not a possibility if they tried his artery would have exploded like a volcano.
After about a week he started to run very high fevers; sometimes over 105 degrees. No infections were found. That left two possibilities: one, the part of his brain that controlled his body temperature was damaged by the stroke, or he developed non bacterial meningitis (a side effect of vioxx). He was placed on an ice mattress for days to keep the fevers from causing more damage. Now it was noted that he was blind in his right eye and he was less responsive every day. It was almost impossible to rouse him. When his eyes were open, he could no longer follow any commands. He just stared blankly!
On the very same day that the news broke that Merck was removing Vioxx, it was confirmed that my husband had developed a blood clot in his right leg. I was watching the news and sitting bedside my dying husband when I heard Peter Jennings (ABC) make the announcement. "VioXX has been pulled because it has shown to cause heart attacks, strokes and blood clots."
I thought I was having a nightmare. I knew he was going to die and already signed a DNR order. His brain was damaged permanently. The neurologist told me he continued to have infarctions (blood clots) in the blood vessels in his brain and they couldn't stop them. He started having seizures and they became continuos for the last ten days of his life.
His days allowed by the HMO (another rotten insurance) were running out and he was transferred to the skilled nursing section of the hospital. The HMO would only allow him to stay there for eight to ten days. I was told he could die anytime or he could linger months. I had no means to take care of him being disabled myself; and could not afford 24/7 help that he needed.
He could do nothing for himself. He would have choked, and no one would know. If he had to go to a nursing home, he could not call for help or even ring for a nurse. He would have been full of bedsores and lying in his feces. He was like a baby and the damn HMO didn't care. The sicker he got, the less he could receive. What a wonderful country we live in! The pharmaceutical companies and the HMO's make all the decisions for the doctors and hospitals.
In this case, Merck put him into the hospital with their VIOXX and now he was running out of time to receive care. Merck knew for four years and did nothing and They cannot deny it anymore. The proof is out for all to see. Thousands have paid with their lives while Merck and their investor's got billions of dollars. Merck murdered my husbnd. He was a good kind man, a father and a grandfather.
I intend to go farther than litigation. Everyone who has been hurt by Vioxx will be invited to join me is this fight and march on Washington as soon as we are gathered together. It doesn't matter how long it takes, we will never see our loved ones again. If I have to spend the rest of my life exposing these greedy murderer's; then so be it! My husband and all the others who died are not statistics. They were flesh and blood human beings who were deliberately killed for profit.

I understand your anger with Merck. I was hospitalized in March of 2004 with DVT due to Vioxx. I had severe blood clots in my left leg and foot, and had 2 blood clots go to my lungs. 10 minutes later than I had arrived at the emergency room, and I would have died. The doctors were amazed how I was even still alive having the amount of massive clots that I had incurred. I have been on Coumadin (blood thinner medicine) now for 15 months and they want me to stay on it at least 2 years. The end result now is my permanent condition of having what is called Post Thrombotic Syndrome. Every day I have to wear a stocking and my leg and foot stay numb almost like it was asleep. I have a large amount of swelling in my ankle area every single day. I have a limp now, I can't do any of the things that I used to do. I am working with an attorney on it right now. The sad thing about the whole ordeal is that I was only 37 years old when this happened to me, and now I have the rest of my life ahead of me in this condition. ):

I'm very sorry to hear this happened. The thing is, Merck only contributed to the so called killing. I can understand people being angry, but the problem with Merck is the same problem plaguing the entire country. Did you know that any number of things, driving your car, wearing shoes or deodorant, or eating the meat and bread on your sandwich...all contribute to ill health? This means poor health for you and our environment. I am still young, and I was once given samples of Vioxx upon a visit to the doctor. They treated it like a miracle drug, and sent me on my way as if they were helping me. Perhaps they were shareholders, or more likely they just don't know any better...even though so many people regard doctors as intelligent. Even if they did know...they have to conform to a "standard of care" which is dictated by profit. People can heal, it is an innate ability or "intelligence" of the body...otherwise we would not be here. Doctors jobs are just to pretend that we can't heal, they assume you cannot heal yourself when you walk into their office.
The good thing for many of us, is that we have experienced this and know that doctors have no idea how to go about healing...I simply stopped going and my health improved. I am young as I said...still alive for now. I know others who have the same logic are out there, just look at this site.
Doctors usually believe they are helping people, but with drugs? Every medication is harmful. I can personally not tell methamphetamine apart from tylenol, and I encourage everyone I know to make the same such comparison. Methamphetamine is just another drug, it is dangerous...but created utilizing our access to other dangerous drugs. I try not to take drugs anymore, there are enough toxins everywhere else thanks to what we tend to call "progress."
I think your energy would be better spent spreading this knowledge, and learning to live more as nature intended. Industry is driven by competition, and how can we compete with nature? The drugs that are now supposedly "keeping people alive" according to doctors....are only an alternative to nature, which keeps people alive just fine and is the reason we are here to begin with. I realize you're probably just upset, but do you at all contribute to this cycle of ill health? I know I do, it would be hard not to...so who do we blame? We must not blame, we must take action...nature demands it.

| I understand what everyone has said about Vioxx because Vioxx also hurt me. I am a 24 year old female that has had a stroke. You might say 24, but yes it's true. I broke my foot and had to have surgery so the doctor said lets try these samples of Vioxx and see how it works...it worked great until November of 2002 when I had a seizure that sent me to the hospital only to find out that I had also suffered a stroke. And up until this point in my life I had never had a seizure until that day. And the seizures seemed to last a couple weeks, and I went until July without seizures. This time they lasted about a month then I didn't have another one until about a month ago. So i went almost 2 years. I dont know if this is a side effect from the stroke so if anyone knows the answer please let me know. But all this time before I found about Vioxx the only way the doctors could explain it was stress related seizures because all EEG's showed nothing. So they wanted me to go on Paxil and all these other stress realted drugs to help stop seizures. I stopped taking all that medicine on my own and went close to 2 years with nothing. And in that time I moved to another state, started and new job and got married...and if that isn't stress what is??? And guess what no seizures. At the time all this was happening no one knew what Vioxx was doing so they didn't know what was going on and they had to explain some how so they did...and it was wrong. I only figured all this out when Vioxx was withdrawn from the market...so i lived all this time thinking what the doctors said where right, Now that I have talked to them they see what really happened to a young girl with no history of anything except a broken foot. I sit here wondering if I will have to deal with seizures the rest of my life. Speak out and get the word out is all we can do now.
