This is a legion from before Dixie; but certainly about the Southland and Life...

A legend on the passage into manhood...

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?  His dad takes him into the forest - blindfolded - and leaves him.

He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not take off the blindfold until the ray of sun shines through it.  He is all by himself.  He cannot cry out for help to anyone.  Once he survives the night he is a MAN.   He cannot tell the other boys of this experience.  Each Lad must come into his own manhood.

The boy was terrified.  He could hear all kinds of noise.  Beasts were all around him.  Maybe even some human would hurt him.  The wind blew the grass and it shook his stump.  But he sat there, never removing the blindfold.  It was the only way he could be a Man.
Finally, after a horrific night, the sound of the night disappeared.  He could feel the warmth of the sun.  He removed his blindfold.
It was then that he saw his father - sitting on the stump next to him - on watch the entire night.
We are never alone.  Even when we do not know it, our Father in Heaven is protecting us.  He is sitting on the stump beside us.
All we have to do is take off our blindfolds.

" One of the main things we must learn in this life is that even though we come and go alone; that there is still a Great God watching whom we can lean on!! Just seek "                                     a Kermit-ism 2007

        Thank you for your reply...

You are actually quite right!!  But the idea is that the father watched over him...  It may well have been from some distance, ect...

Much like the old American Indian story that goes like this...

Once upon a time; back when animals could speak to humans: a man had climbed through some mountains and high up on a pass came upon a Rattle Snake on the cold ground...  The snake ask the man to take him down to the warm valley below... The man answered " But, you will bite me!" ...   " Oh No!"  said the snake...

Well the man picked up the snake and carried it down to the warm valley below, placing it upon the ground... Then the snake struck the man on the leg...  The  man replied...  " But, you promised not to bite me if I brought you down!!"

Where by the snake answered... "You knew what I was; before you picked me up!"

So the lesson is explained for the reader or listener to learn!!  Now the story may be some what allegorical or paraphrased; but the True meaning is still there...

" It is the Truth we should seek to learn from!! " a Kermit-ism 2007
