  • UGH- Eating Way Too Much   by  drpr     18 y     2,686       8 Messages Shown       Blog: Raw Odyssey
I'm having quite the stressful weekend and I've responded by eating too much. No, eating raw does not cure old hand-to-mouth behaviors, just the type of foods you pick up with your hand and put in your mouth! I've been gorging on nuts for the most part, and they've actually been making me a little bit ill. Who knew? I'll be glad when I've finished that bag. I don't plan to replace it! I've eaten a lot of fruit this weekend as well. I'm very happy that my overeating of fruits and nuts won't harm me the way Snicker's bars and potato chips would, but I'll still go to bed with a stomach ache if I don't watch it! I'm trying to drink a lot while I study to keep busy, and that helps somewhat.

So, am I the only raw foodist who overeats? I've read where some raw foodists believe you cannot overeat raw food, but I don't believe that to be true in my case. Anytime I eat when I'm not hungry, I call that overeating! I have some major changes coming up in my life over the next month or so: two new jobs, a new semester of classes, and a new place to live. All of these will be a challenge to me to stick to my raw diet and to not overeat. We shall see...

Yeah the overeating thing is a struggle. Don't give up. At least you are aware of your issues.

    • Is it hot where you are?   by  bootzey     18 y     1,453
I read in an Ayurveda book that eating nuts in the summer will make you sick. that nuts are a food that is best enjoyed when the weather is cold. I actually followed this advice last year, I could tell the difference. I wasn't so 'bound up'as I normally had been. Now I wait until the weather is cool before eating large amounts of any kind of nut.

You may be interested to check out my blog "30 days RAW" - I'm not doing 100% RAW anymore but still have a plant-based diet. Yes, even on 100% RAW, I overate and it was a consistently difficult thing for me to deal with. I've read that stuff about not being able to overeat but I agree completely with you - if I'm not hungry and eating, even if I don't eat myself sick, it's still overeating! That lack of moderation is why I'm not SUPER-SEXY-HOT and am only pretty-sexy! ;-) Seriously, going completely RAW helped me shift my focus. It's obvious I can be disciplined enough to change my eating habits around completely but regardless the snack-all-through-the-afternoon habit stuck anyway, so now I am focused on that. I'm a little more liberal with eating but I concentrate now on not eating between meals. This is my #2 diet priority; #1 is maintaining a plant-based diet.

I hope this helps. Other people must not go through it once the physical cravings stop, and I envy that but for me the mental preoccupation remains, and it may be partly due to my husband being gone (Navy) or really just plain habit. Take care, and it's all a journey. As long as we're making progress, (even if it's slow), we're doing wonderful things for our health! :-)

      • Hey, Rooth..   by  drpr     18 y     1,300
I empathize with you, too. Eating raw took away the cravings, but not the comfort of eating. Eating for me is a distraction. If I'm eating, I can't cry, and I don't have to think of negative things while there's more food to eat. When I overate this week, I didn't have an easy time trying to figure out what to eat because I craved nothing! So I actually found myself buying stuff I used to binge on because that's all I could think of. I just wanted some comfort and an escape for awhile. I hate that I go to food for that! I have to work on this, because I'm going to be stressed out for years! (for as long as I'm in graduate school).
