Master Cleanse & Raw Food News Letter
    22 July 2007

Weight loss is not the problem.

"A friend, who is a quadriplegic, told me about an incredible fasting program using a specially formulated lemonade recipe that he used periodically and credited for his good health.

"This friend who was not supposed to walk, does indeed walk. He uses a cane, but he walks. He is active and, most of all, aside from mobility issues, has an incredibly healthy appearance—vibrant glowing skin, crystal clear eyes and an incredibly positive attitude.

"He uses this fasting program once a year, sometimes every six months. So, it was not hard to take his recommendation of the program seriously. He didn't mention any book, just described to me what he used.

"Armed with that information, I took to the Internet to learn more about this. This led me to Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days.

"I bought the book and read it right away, but then procrastinated about starting the program. I had just embarked on the nutrition path and was concurrently reading and applying several principles. But after learning about an acid problem and fearing being in a disease state, I quickly turned to this program as a way to jump start my path to alkalinity.

"This book is a good guide to using the program and offers some Q & A's from users of the program. It's simple and easy to read.

"I suggest everyone try this program."

    A reader from Idaho

My purpose is to educate you on low- and no-cost ways others have achieved and maintained vibrant good health. Like anything else, if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself. Because everyone's body is different, you must learn what will work for you.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Weight loss is not the problem.

As the author of a book on alternative health, I hear from many people, both those who are very overweight, depressed and ill and "healthy" people who have no specific symptoms, but want vibrant good health.

The first thing I tell these people is that something can be done about it. This is most important idea I can convey. Knowing that, they will not give up until they find a method that works for them and there are several methods out there. The second thing I tell them is that the Master Cleanse works for more than 90% of those who do it as laid out by Stanley Burroughs, the originator of the cleanse, whose method I echo in my book, Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days.

However, as miraculous as it is for most people, the Master Cleanse is only one of three pillars for vibrant good health. The other two are proper nutrition (a primarily raw vegan diet with limited use of sea salt rather than table salt) and a lack of suppressive stress. Frequently, people have such a dramatic resurgence after just doing the Master Cleanse that they don't bother with the other two pillars.

Suppressive stress is the only form of stress that can prohibit any recovery. People who get better, then get worse, continually cycling up and then down, are frequently under suppressive stress. If they are, nothing will permanently help until they resolve that situation. Fortunately, there is a rather straightforward explanation and handling for that in The Cause of Suppression by L. Ron Hubbard.

When I talk to people at speaking engagements who are very overweight, depressed and miserable, most are surprised to discover that those symptoms are frequently related to one another and even more frequently the result of toxins stored in the fat cells of their body.

Most people think of toxins as deadly poisons that kill a person instantly. However, toxins range from that type of instant killer to those that merely cause a person to be irritable and tired all the time. For instance, Cornell University’s Department of Animal Science reports that lead poisoning's first symptoms are nausea, sluggishness, vomiting, digestive pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness and dehydration.

Furthermore, there are several types of toxins including environmental (such as lead or mercury), digestive (such as uric acid, which is a by-product of protein digestion and which, when it builds up in the joints, causes gout), and food toxins (such as artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors and preservatives, to which so many people are sensitive).

The Master Cleanse immediately removes the possibility of food toxins and excessive uric acid production, gives the digestive system a chance to rest, and gives the liver a chance to handle the stored older toxins rather than struggle with a ceaseless stream of new ones.

Most people think of detoxification as being only one step: toxins are here one minute and completely gone the next. However, detoxification is actually a two step process. First toxins are mobilized from where they are stored in the body, and then they are neutralized by the liver and eliminated.

This is important because when the toxins are mobilized, they can create detoxification symptoms (tiredness, aches, pains, rashes, etc.) before they are finally eliminated. These are generally milder during the Master Cleanse because of the additional elimination actions of the cleanse and because the body is not also having to process food. However, one can expect days 2, 3, and 7 of the Master Cleanse to be somewhat more difficult than the other days. Also, knowing that the next morning's eliminations will eliminate or lessen these detoxification symptoms makes it easier to ignore them and finish the full 10-day cleanse.

I think one of the best things about the Master Cleanse is that people uniformly tell me their diets improve after the Master Cleanse. Whether a person is a junk food junkie or healthy vegetarian, they usually eat better following the cleanse. I believe this is because the Master Cleanse removes some cravings for the “bad” food.

I've noticed that during the Master Cleanse, I crave what I'm detoxifying—hamburgers, barbeque ribs or cheesecake, for instance. I have also noticed that people who stop smoking have stronger cravings for cigarettes. Their cravings increase because the body is now given a chance to detoxify and eliminate those toxins. That's what makes the first few days of giving up smoking so difficult.

So with the toxins lessened or gone from Master Cleanse, a person has fewer cravings for the "bad" food. So, it's easier for them to choose to eat real food.

And by the way, taking probiotics after the cleanse also helps to reduce or eliminate cravings for the "bad" food.

    2. My mailbag: coming off an anti-depression drug

The number of emails I receive every day makes it impossible to personally answer all of them in the time I have. However, each week I select one that has been asked by many people and answer it here in this newsletter, which goes out to thousands, as a means of answering some of those questions.

"I am currently taking 10 mg of Lexapro (an anti-depressant) and have been on this medication for almost 3 years. I have recently been weaning myself off of it and have found that I have been able to go from 20mg back to my original 10mg quite easily. (I tried doing the same in the winter and was not as successful.)

Do you have any clients who have done the cleanse while on a medication of this sort? What were their experiences? Are there any precautions I should take? Have they been able to use this as a tool to wean themselves off of prescription medicines?

I want to wean myself completely off of the medication and I have my prescribing doctor's approval to do so and am hoping that this will be a successful tool in helping me. Interestingly, my doctor (family practice) told me to go "cold turkey." Two years ago when I tried that, the results were not good. After checking online, I found numerous mentions from consumers that supported my experience and did not recommend going cold turkey.

Any insights or past experience that you could offer me would be greatly appreciated."

First, I am not a licensed health care practitioner and cannot diagnose, prescribe, cure or treat any disease.

Although, I am not aware of any person who has come off Lexapro, in particular, I can share with you my knowledge of others' experiences with drugs on the Master Cleanse. And since your prescribing physician wouldn't have given her approval to get off this drug if you still needed it, we can view your difficulty of quitting as an addiction.

The Master Cleanse makes it easier to quit various addictions, such as coffee, smoking, etc. It does this by providing for daily elimination actions—laxative tea in the evening, salt water flush in the morning—that reduce the effects of the substance being eliminated. (See the testimonial at the beginning of Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days.)

As for suggestions, you need to find the middle ground between two actions. You want to get the residual dosage of the drug out as fast as possible on one hand, but you don't want to mobilize so much at once that you have a severe detoxification symptoms.

So, I would follow my suggestions for "People who have to take it easy on the Master Cleanse" in Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days (pp. 27,28).

If the detoxification symptoms become too extreme, you can take baths in Epsom Salt, drink lots of water in addition to the lemonade or even stop the Master Cleanse and use one of the slower ways to detoxify that won't cause such severe detox symptoms. (See the article "Detoxifying too fast?" in my 17 June 2007 newsletter for other slower detoxification methods.)

    3. You can help improve health care!

The medical arts advance each time someone discovers something new that improves our understanding of life and health. In fact, "science" could be defined as direct observation to determine the truth of something, rather than just accepting those things that "everybody knows." A majority vote doesn't determine what's true.

For example, English physician William Harvey (1578 - 1657), appointed court physician to King James I and later to King Charles I, discovered that blood circulates in the body as pumped by the heart. It had been taught for nearly 1500 years that the lungs pumped the blood, which did not circulate, but was made by the liver and consumed by the internal organs.

Harvey's story is a good example for other reasons, too. His new ideas were not accepted quickly because the status quo was firmly entrenched. "Harvey's work had little effect on general medical practice at the time — blood letting, based on the prevailing [teaching], was a popular practice, and continued to be so even after Harvey's ideas were accepted."

What does this have to do with you improving health care? As an individual, I firmly believe you must become responsible for your health. You have to learn what improves or worsens your health. Use your licensed health care practitioner as an educator and mentor, but recognize that bodies are different and you need to know about your particular body.

From a national point of view, you need to be aware that significant scientific agreement can be wrong—dead wrong.

Harvey challenged the conventional medical thinking of the 1600's. The study and practice of medicine was almost sacred at the time Harvey lived (and now, too?). No one dared to challenge it. To rebel against it could end the career of any doctor. In fact, many other doctors and scientists rejected Harvey and his findings for twenty years. Some of his patients even deserted him. So, the result of a new discovery can be quite negative for the discoverer.

In fact, the FDA has announced a new proposed guideline for health claims made about food and supplements. It will require any claim to be proven to the degree of significant scientific agreement before it can be made. This new guideline runs directly counter to Representative Ron Paul's proposed Health Freedom Protection Act (House of Representatives bill HR 2117), which requires the FDA to prove that claims are false or misleading before it can prohibit them.

If you think about it, FDA research to disprove claims helps to forward health science, while FDA requiring significant scientific agreement before making any claims slows the advance of health science.

So, besides taking responsibility for your own body and health, help yourself and others by clicking here to tell the FDA that their new proposed guideline is bad science.

"I can't believe how easy it was to make myself feel 1000% better! Not only did I lose weight, but I lost the sluggish, heavy, dull feeling I had had for many years. It is so simple to follow this program, and the results are fast and long lasting. The best money I ever spent on any health product!"

    4. Marlene's green smoothie recipe

This recipe makes enough for 2 - 3 people.

Soak 4 tablespoons of flax seeds overnight in 1 cup of purified or distilled water—not chlorinated, fluorinated tap water and put 2 cups of purified, distilled or spring water in the refrigerator overnight.

Put the following in a Vita Mix or blender.

    2 bananas
    1 cup frozen strawberries
    4 large romaine lettuce leaves
2 cups of water (or fresh squeezed orange juice)
4 tablespoons of the soaked flax seeds
Then blend the above until liquefied. It will taste like a strawberry-banana shake, but have a very "fresh" smell and won't taste like lettuce at all.

Try it. See if it's not a great way to get fresh raw greens into your daily diet.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The idea is to be well. The first step is wanting to be. The old Chinese saying is 'When you are sick of sickness, you are no longer sick.'

"The second step is to do something to improve your health. Each of us is ultimately responsible for our own wellness. I think we should leave no stone unturned in our search for better health.

"I also believe that you get out of your body what you put into it. Your body will respond to your efforts to improve your health.

"The time to start is right now. Another old saying: 'If not now, when? If not here, where? If not you, then who?' "
