Since the first of June, the Twin Cities have seen two 90-degree days and one 93-degree day, according to Illinois State University. It was 89 degrees Sunday and Wednesday. In contrast, there was only one 90-degree day during summer 2004 -- on June 8. The average high for the first part of June is in the mid-80s. "We've had a surge of sales for annual (swimming) passes," said Randy Ralston, facilities/ aquatics program manager for the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department.

"Our (swimming pool) attendance has skyrocketed," said Kersten Wilson, aquatics and special events supervisor for the Normal Parks and Recreation Department. "I'll bet in the first two weeks (of this year's swimming season) we've already met half if not the total attendance from the first month last year. "The lines have been out the door every day."

Mike Hall, director of the Normal Public Works Department, said the hot weather has caused "pavement blowups" on College Avenue and Fort Jesse Road. "It's the thermal expansion of concrete," Hall said. "It's a little early. We usually see them in July or August. They happen when we have several days of 90 degrees." Bloomington has not had similar problems yet this year, said Public Service Director Brian Brakebill.

The importance of the crucifixes were particularly impressed upon Veronica. She understood that the angel of death would bypass those homes that had the crucifixes on their front and back door, drawing a parallel with the incident reported in the Bible.
