1. What's the difference between going 21 or 40 days?

Q: I'm curious about the benefits of going 40 days vs. say 21 days. I have been researching for days trying to find an answer online on various websites, all for not.

A: Stanley Burroughs doesn't say why 10 days is the minimum or what additional gains are usually found with more time on the cleanse, but here is what I've found and what I know of others' benefits. The worst days are 2 and 3. So to go 5 days or less means you're going through all the grief without experiencing much of the wonderful part of the cleanse. Beyond that, detox days seem to come every 7 days or so. So, additional tough days (not as bad as 2 or 3, though) are 7, 14, 21, etc. Furthermore, since the old waste seems to come off in layers, you're only doing recent waste for the first few days. If you go 10, you're at least getting the recent waste eliminated and one older layer and then getting to enjoy a couple really good days.

I've personally found that after about 14 days, I was able to separate the smell of foods, like ribs, from feeling I had eat them and bring them into my body, which gave me much more control over my diet after the cleanse. I know of a few people who did several 20-day and longer cleanses and each one changed their diet for the better over several months or years.

I can't say what would happen at 40 days because the longest I've ever gone was 28.

2. Is the Master Cleanse a colon cleanse?

A: Burroughs says the Master Cleanse will clean the colon, liver, kidneys, joints and other parts of the body. I've personally noticed that stiff or occasionally painful joints always feel limber and painless after a few days on the Master Cleanse. Many other people have remarked on the same thing.

There are colon cleanses that are only colon cleanses and they have a place in the world of alternative medicine. For example, pregnant or nursing women should not do the Master Cleanse because the detoxification may very well eliminate the toxins into the milk or fetus. A mechanical colon cleanse, however, such as one which uses bentonite clay or psyllium husks, probably wouldn't have that same problem.

3. Are colds normal on the Master Cleanse?

Q: I am on morning 5 and very cranky, but doing pretty good. I have what seems like a cold that started on the 3rd day, am also having a lot of foggy thinking and am unable to concentrate. This is my 3rd attempted cleanse this year. The first one was great. On the second one, I only made it to the 4th day. I quit smoking and drinking coffee 4 days before starting, which was difficult. However, Stanley Burroughs says the cleanse curbs cravings. So, I have had trouble sleeping, am not losing the average 2 lbs per day -- more like 1 pound a day, and have a cold. Is this normal? I am drinking probably 8-11 glasses a day and have been keeping up with regular working out and daily life.

A: Cold symptoms (runny nose, coughs, etc.) are some of the ways the body eliminates waste from the lungs, which are one of the main detoxification organs of the body along with kidneys, colon, liver, gall bladder and skin. Therefore, it shouldn't seem strange that cold symptoms are very, very common at times on the Master Cleanse.

As far as the other difficulties you mention, the first thing I always check on people who are having detox symptoms is are they doing all the elimination actions (laxative tea and salt water flush). That usually clears up the problems within 3 days.

4. How do I break the Master Cleanse?

Q: I have successfully finished my 10-day cleanse and am hoping I can do it again in about 5 or 6 months. I am now on the second day of breaking the cleanse. For the 1st day I had grapefruit and orange juice with the lemonade. Today I had orange juice for breakfast; an orange for lunch and I just had a raw avocado for dinner. I feel a little full but I think I am okay. I was just wondering for future reference is it okay to have an avocado or something like that for dinner on the second day after my ending my fast? I hate stomach pains and want to make sure I do everything right.

A: Burroughs says to break the cleanse with orange juice the first and second day with a vegetable soup for dinner the second day (mostly broth with a few optional rye wafers). The third day should be orange juice in the morning, soup at lunch and vegetables, salad and fruit for dinner. The fourth day, normal eating may be resumed. Interestingly, Burroughs says not to eat meat or milk as they develop toxins, which is exactly what T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. found in the 23-year, 880,000,000 person study detailed in "The China Study."

Burroughs says vegetarians should drink orange juice for the first and second day, juice the morning of the third day, raw fruit for lunch and vegetables and/or salad for dinner.

5. Can I do the Master Cleanse after surgery?

Q: Can I do the Master Cleanse four days after a tummy tuck? I don't feel much like eating and am staying home. So, I thought it would be a good time.

A: I don't recommend the Master Cleanse for anyone who's had surgery until they are completely healed as growing new tissue requires more than the usual amount of protein in the diet and there is none in the Master Cleanse. This normally presents no problem for the limited time someone does the Master Cleanse, but could be a problem for someone recovering from surgery, burns, etc.

6. Can I make up the lemonade in the morning for work?

Q: I leave the house at 6:30 am and usually get home from work around 5:45 or 6:00 pm. I am a dental assistant in an extremely busy practice and don't have a set lunch break or any break for that matter. We eat, snack and drink in between patients, while doing notes and reports, cleaning the rooms, and sterilization. I know my eating and drinking habits and overall health practices have gone drastically downhill since I've been working this job and I am determined to do something about it. I have done the MC once before in fall of 2004 at a different job where I could get up and leave my desk to go make the lemonade drink and use the restroom whenever I needed to and I had a very positive experience with it. I want to do it again to jump start my new resolve to eating and drinking healthier, but am concerned with the time issue of squeezing the juice and cleaning up the mess each time I need to take the lemonade drink. I was wondering if I can pre-squeeze all the juice I will need for each day that morning before I go to work? Then just keep it in the refrigerator and add it to my water and syrup and cayenne pepper as I go. I wasn't sure if this somehow reduces the freshness or effectiveness of the juice.

A: Ideally, you should make the lemonade fresh for each drink as there is some loss of enzymes over time. However, practically, you may need to make up enough to drink while at work and then mix your evening lemonade fresh after you get home. If so, do NOT put the cayenne into the lemonade to sit all day. Cayenne pepper gets hotter as it sits in the lemonade!!!
