I'm Curious, does anyone know of any research that indicates which is better for chelation? I've learned there are 2 types of ALA, R-Alpha Lipoic Acid, which is the natural form in the body and S-Alpha Lipoic Acid which is an artificial analog.
Most supplements have both. Some supplements are advertising they only have R-Alpha Lipoic Acid.
Any info would be appreciated. I've been chelating with regular ALA from Source Naturals, which probably has both and it seems to work. But I don't like to use anything artifical, so I was thinking of switching to pure R-Alpha Lipoic Acid.

According to Andy (Cutler), all the research into alpha lipoic acid as a chelator is based on the use of the synthetic S-ALA. He advises against the use of R-lipoic acid purely as there is no/not enough (can't remember which) research on it. I have come across some websites which describe R-ALA as a chelator though.
I agree with you that my preference would have been for something more natural but Andy's suggestion that it means basically experimenting on oneself put me off.
I have Kirkmans which actually doesn't say which one it is on the label, just 'alpha lipoic acid' but I assume it's the S version as a lot of people use it.

Thanks for the response. The one I'm using also just says "Alpha Lipoic Acid". I've read that this means its about half R half S, because S is a by product for manufacturing R. In any case, if Andy says use the regular Alpha Lipoic Acid, I'll follow Andy's advice.
I didn't follow his advice ( I chelated with Cilantro and NAC ) for 2 years after my fillings were cleaned out. The other stuff initially helped, but I got to a point where I didn't get any better. Then I lost track and went off and did a bunch of stuff like acupuncture and NAET. NAET did help some with the allergies.
But recently the light went on and I started ALA chelation. It seems to be helping much more than anything else. I feel bad I wasted so much time, but these Heavy Metals cloud your judgement, and make you get confused and forget your path to healing. After trying to fight yeast, infection, fatique, allergies, etc for the last year, I finally realized that I still must have lots of heavy metals around in my CNS. I still get the swelling in the eyes and in the head, and pains/clenching in the jaw, along with about 10 other symptoms 2 1/2 years after getting my fillings out!!

Just wanted to say don't beat yourself up for what you feel was wasting time (though I know how easy that is to do!)...it's all a learning process. Chelation is a such a minefield.....there's so much conflicting info out there it's easy to get caught up in trying different and sometimes unsafe things. It's my personal experience too that heavy metal toxicity affects your judgement!
Did you ever have a hair test?
Also just wanted to say that jaw clenching can be related to parasites, though of course that's connected to metals too.

I did get a hair test. It didn't show any high heavy metals. But this was already 2 years after getting the fillings out and after chelation using a number of other things ( NAC, Cilantro, Garlic ). I think my body dumped most of the heavy metals in the soft tissues. However, I think the heavy metals are still locked into my CNS. I had 1 tooth full of infection where under the Amalgam filling it was touching the nerve. That side of my jaw tingles or aches all the time now.
I know about the parasites, I've been fighting them for 3 years. But I've come to realize that no matter what you do, they won't be completely killed off until you address the heavy metals. I've taken tons of things for parasites, yeast, infection, but nothing ever resolves it.
But I noticed after my last chelation and only my 2nd chelation ever with ALA, my body dumped "lots" of parasites. So I think I'm on the right track.

Last round I tried to do about 50. I could only find 100mg capsules, so I would open them up and pour about 1/2 out. Not very precise, but I figure I was taking from 40-60mg. I did it for 3 days, and I was getting pretty "wacked" out by the 3rd day.
No, I didn't use DMSA. ALA seems to work well enough, and I'm kindof a "naturalist". Before I got a handle on this problem as Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome and mercury, I went to a bunch of convential doctors and they put me on a bunch of different meds. Which really screwed me up more. Since then, I've had a real problem with even the idea of taking another man-made, artificial drug. But thats just me. DMSA is supposed to be pretty safe as chelators go, so don't let me scare you. Andy knows what he's talking about. I ignored his advice at first and made the problem worse for me...
