I don't know that much about this protocol, I am planning to do some heavy metal detox, but can't at the moment because I have a mercury filling that is inside of my crown, which is something I can't remove so easily until I have more funds.
From some of my readings here I understand that chlorella is not recommended. But from my research on heavy metal detox it seems to be recommended everywhere as one of the best and safest agents to bind mercury and other metals to carry them outside the body. I've been taking some even now because from what I understand it doesn't pull metals out, it just binds whatever is in the intestines.
My question is, why isn't chlorella recommended in the Cutler's protocol? Thanks.Advertisement

MoreThis is a reply to # 105,289Some people really swear by chlorella, but it has caused major problems for others. Cutler doesn't recommend it as it's sulphur food which can cause mercury to move about a lot, ie in and out of the cells and drop the mercury without actually excreting it. It's not a true chelator as it contains just one thiol (a molecule that binds to mercury). A true chelator should contain two thiols (so bind to mercury much more tightly and escort it out of the body) so alpha lipoic acid, dmsa and dmps (all contain two) are the only true and thus safe chelators to use according to Cutler.
In the chelation groups on yahoo there are some people who have suffered very bad effects from taking chlorella. It didn't agree with me, made me feel very wired on very low doses.
Another reason is that some brands of chlorella are supposed to be contaminated with mercury as no doubt if it does absorb/bind to mercury to some degree it will have done this already from within its own environment.

Most food high in protein is high in sulfur. Eggs and whey are high in cysteine. Is he against eating these?
I've been taking chlorella for a while, 15-20g a day, and have not felt any side effect. Many say that bad effects can come from too small doses. I've been taking it for 55 days and it's helping my digestion, I'm also having an average of 3 bowel movements a day.

This medline article suggests that "CVE (chlorella vulgaris extract) /lead administration indicates that the immunomodulation effect of CVE plays an important role in the ability of this algae to reduce blood lead levels."
Anyway I'll keep taking it, it's not that expensive and it is still a good sources of protein and vitamins whether it chelates or not. Many sources and testimonials claim dramatic results after about 3 months - 5 months. I know, it sounds like a commercial strategy.Advertisement

Some people feel better on a sulphur restrictive diet, including me. Its often related to high cysteine levels.

That's interesting. I'd never heard that. I ONLY ever took low doses but it made me feel so uncomfortable I had to stop though I know the recommendation is to build up to much higher doses. You obviously have no problem with it but just remember, everyone is dealing with different biochemical issues here which at least Cutler recognises.

do you think chlorella is safe even with some Amalgams left? I heard both answers: yes, it is safe as it doesn't pull mercury out of tissues just binds free flowing one, and no, it isn't safe, as it does mobilize mercury in the body and can cause harm if Amalgams are present. I used to take it, and it never bothered me. I stopped when I heard that Andy thought so poorly of it.
I suspect that it may be a good nutrient, but does little or no chelation to speak of.
If you are going to take it, I would get one of the top brands like Sun or Yaeyama. The cheaper stuff is likely to have mercury in it.- Re: Why not chlorella? prosperous

This is a reply to # 105,327Yes, Yaeyama is the brand I use. There have been many many studies showing that chlorella does really chelate, not only mercury but other heavy metals and chemicals. It also seems to have other health benefits, as well as high levels of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. I can take it without a problem, but my bf got violently sick after talking it (bad vomiting, diarrhea), we thought it was food poisoning but next time he took it the same thing happened. I wonder though if he has allergy to chlorella (I heard some people can be allergic to it) but then again he has NO other food or any allergies whatsover so could it be something else? Anyway, I am lost as to whether it is good or not now, I heard many convincing arguments that it is, the only negative one is by Andy (and then my bf getting sick with it didn't help my confidence in the stuff either).

This is a reply to # 105,289Not sure what this means but both my cats are addicted to chlorella! They practically put their heads in my mouth when they smell it on my breath too.
On another note chlorella has some pretty good data showing it is effective as a chelator by the German Dr Klinghardt and the Japanese Dr Omura. According to Marco Pharma who distributes drainage remedies and chelators they recommend detoxing with chlorella prior to using cilantro.
Their cilantro is grown in Israel and was tested by the German company Nestmanns for the presence of any metals in the product. They also found that a liquid preparation of cilantro has the tendency to negative changes due to oxidative decomposition so they opted for a nonliquid version. Their product is a dry form that easily dissolves in the mouth and is more stable. They claim that cilantro detoxs metals, chelates the arteries, and is antiviral.
Other uses for chlorella are anti inflammatory and promotes absorbtion of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
