Over the last 6 months, our 2 yr old 110 lb German Shepard mix has contracted giardia 3 times, treated with Antibiotics from vet. The last two days his bowel movements have been VERY watery. I hope he doesn't have giardia again. We also have a cat, but she doesn't seem to have giardia - stool sample at vet was negative. Besides, her litter box is in a room where the dog does not go into, and he is not exposed directly to the litter box.
We had our water tested - negative for giardia. We have cleaned our house top to bottom - we even used Lysol on every imaginable surface - but our baby still ends up with diarrhea (hopefully not giardia again). We have racked up $1500.00 in vet bills over the last 6 months, and we can't afford it anymore.
The diarrhea is not bloody - just super runny, sometimes looks like raw egg whites. We have not changed his food or any other habits. We keep our yard picked up from pet waste, and do not let him roam around outside without us being right there (don't want him to eat anything he shouldn't, and if we turn our backs for one minute he's always eating something).
Two questions:
1) I can't figure out what the source is in our home for the giardia. Any thoughts?
2) Is there anything over-the-counter that I can give my dog for the chronic diarrhea (possibly giardia)?

I can feel your frusteration, and I'm sorry you and your pup has had to endure this. I give my 2 dogs 1 tblspn of coconut oil everyday which has many many health benefits including protection from worms and parasites. Coconut oil is extremely effective at killing many viruses and bacteria and fungals including the parasite giardia. Coconut oil is very high in medium chain fatty acids which is what makes coconut oil so powerful.
Your pup might not actually have giardia again because after giardia has been treated some damage may have occured in the intestinal lining which can cause chronic health problems that persist for years after the parasite is gone. Coconut oil will also help to restore intestinal health over time and make him an inhospitable host.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if your GS is having diarrhea right now then give him a couple drops of oil of oregano. I have never had a case of diarrhea in our family (dogs included)that oregano didn't stop instantly. Also oregano is also effective against giardia. Your dog won't like the smell or taste of oregano oil, so I usually offer a tiny bit of plain yogurt after I put the oregano in their mouth just to cool their mouths off a bit.

This is a reply to # 1,245,857Does the dog drink from the toilet? It's possible to pick up giardia or other 'bugs' from us.
Another possible infection can be C. diff as we carry it in our intestines as normal flora. This can cause loose/watery stools too. - Re: doggie diarrhea - giardia LuellaMay

This is a reply to # 1,245,857Use colloidal silver and make this a daily regimen for your dog. Colloidal silver is nature's antibiotic and actually works much better than antibiotics. This is a reply to # 1,245,857The recontamination most likely is coming from either your yard, the area you walk your dog in, dog park, etc. It is carried through the feces. When he has it, you should immediately clean up any waste from your yard as soon as he goes and treat the area (maybe with a bleach/water mixture). Unfortunately you can't know whether another dog with giardia has previously gone in an area that you walk your dog.
