Hello, I can not figure out what to do anymore. I have leaky gut, sensitivities to many food, chemicals, etc. My last test showed no more yeast nor parasites.
I keep having gas each day normally around the same time. I have it in the morning then have a bowel movement and gas stops until sometime later in the day it starts back up and increases into the night then stops again once I have the next bowel movemement the next morning. I do have less gas on some days but have not figured out why less on those days. I started trying to use digestive enzymes yesterday but so far that is not helping. I use coconut flour for fiber (insoluble fiber). I drink lots of water, eat mainly organic foods, quinoa, wild game meat, no refined carbs etc. I don't know if I need more fiber or more water or what. If I have a bowel movement in the afternoon the gas stops then but normally I only have one a day in the morning. Doesn't insoluble fiber slow down the digestion of food? I am wondering if what I eat for lunch (how much fiber etc) causes the gas to sometimes start around 3 and sometimes around 5.
I've tried increasing magnesium malate to help have another bowel movement but I am having to take a large amount and don't think that is really the answer.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,319,412Does anyone know how much fiber someone should try to take in at once? Like I mentioned in my previous post, I use organic coconut flour for insoluble fiber. I have not counted the fiber amount in my other foods like fresh blueberries/papaya and quinoa etc. I know my shredded coconut has some too. I was told to get in 30g fiber per day. Now I am trying to cut way back to see if that causes the gas to stop or get much better.

I have recently put out my story about my own problems with gas. I hope something in my own experience will help you. Here are some things you might think about: did you suddenly add a lot of fiber? The more fiber and calories you take in, the more water you need--otherwise constipation/gas. Omega 3's and brekafast with yogurt and kefir helped my gas a LOT. Taking wheat out has helped a lot. Digestive enzymes never helped me. If I get constipated ( stools hard or pebbly) I have lots of gas problems. My gas always stops after a b.m. as well. I had to learn to add fiber in slowly or start it at night so gas is over with after breakfast and b.m. At first I had a lot of gas even with the water, but slowly my body adjusted to the fiber and I have a very manageable amount of gas first thing in the morning--and it is not foul-smelling. During the day, I eat smaller amounts of fiber at a time--so not much problem anymore. I like to eat a salad with some garbanzo beans with lunch. I also think this has helped me not to have Body Odor . But I think wheat is something I just can't take. At least not whole wheat. NO acidic food + starch. This causes me lots of terrible gas. DO try keeping a food diary. Then when you read or hear about different ideas, you can look back and see if those things might be causing the problem.. I am saying a prayer for you!! This is a reply to # 1,330,434Thank you. I do keep a food diary and I have not had wheat in over a year.
I did start adding coconut flour a lot to my foods trying to get the 25-30g fiber I was told I needed. I have cut back and it was much better until yesterday when I started having gas in the afternoon like before and I ate basically like I have been the past week with little to no gas in the afternoon/evening. The only thing was I missed taking some of my supplements like Vitamin C. Maybe the Vitamin C loosens things up, I don't know. I hope to trying increasing my fiber slowly like you mentioned. I am not sure about kefir, I do not tolerate acidophilus.
What do you eat/take for fiber? Everyone is different, but how much fiber do you think you have per meal (the maximum amount)?

This is a reply to # 1,330,478For fiber right now...I usually have garbanzo beans in a salad at lunch and then after dinner I cook one-third cup of oat bran in one cup of water and mix with brown sugar, blueberries and a little butter. I think the oat bran provides about 5 gms fiber, partly soluble--partly insoluble. I do take a lot of omega 3's (flax and fish oil) and omega 6 ( evening primrose oil) though which I think is helping me stay so regular. I am actually having a little diarrhea now so I may have to cut back on the evening primrose oil. I think it is the problem. One good thing about diarrhea is no gas. However, I realize that's not good for me either. I do adjust how much fiber, oil, and water based on how much I eat that may constipate me. I wrote my whole story in detail on this forum "my journey to stopping flatulence and better health." It will give you details about my situation. I know the answers are different fior everyone, and I pray that you will find your answers.
As for the kefir, I don't know if your having a problem with acidophilus will make any difference. Kefir is a dairy product, but easier to digest like yogurt is. I think if you can take yogurt you'd also be able to have kefir, but I don't know for sure. The kefir is a fermented food--like yogurt. But I have read that it is better than yogurt because the good bacteria in it can actually colonize in your intestines. From what I've read, one of the problems with people with smelly gas has to do with the bacteria that inhabit your colon. Anyway, I used to drink whey protein which is a prebiotic-- whey is in yogurt. It helped a lot, but if you are prone to constipation it could be a problem...you have to drink lots of water when you are taking it.
Taking 25-30 extra grams of fiber at once is a huge jump. Hopefully if you just make small changes it will help. Let me know if you find anything that works for you.. Blessings!- Re: need help with gas/flatulence - ... weighttrainer

I can't eat a lot of things due to food sensitivities so it is harder to get the fiber in but I'll try to increase slowly. I will wait a little on the kefir so I can keep track of how things are going better first. I do think my problem is like yours in that it depends on how much I eat and what type etc, basically how much is sitting in me (or colon etc).
Thanks and let me know what you figure out about your EPO oil. I use that along with fish oil now.

How much calcium do you normally take at once and per day? Do you always take the same amount of magnesium with the calcium? Do you take the same amount of magnesium total per day as calcium or more?
If you eat/take fiber at night do you drink a lot of water then too? I thought about trying more fiber in the evening but did not know if I would need to drink too much water then need to wake up more when sleeping.
If you don't have a b.m. in the morning time, do you normally later or is it the next morning?

Here is where I am at now. Every morning I eat yogurt with flax meal, flax oil and cinnamon. Cinnamon is supposed to be anti-inflammatory. I also drink a smoothie with plain yogurt, plain kefir, blueberries and stevia. At noon I take one slo-mag. It has 212 mg of calcium and 128 mg of magnesium. I read somewhere that you can't absorb more than 500 mg (I think) of Calcium at once. So I take it at lunch since I have calcium at breakfast. At dinner I take another slo-mag, 1 epo, and 2 fish oil. I am stil trial and error with the oils. I do best when I have a morning b.m. Most days I go first thing in the morning after water and coffee. I haven't been having to have so much fiber I think because wheat seems to be my major problem, although I suffer from symptoms of a mild case of sjogren's syndrome. That's why I think the oils help me so much. I may have to increase them a little because my face is not so dry when I have enough.
I found that when I took the oat bran at night, I couldn't take so much water or I would wake up all night to go to the bathroom. I just tryied to make sure I stayed well hydrated during the day. I am on a gluten-free diet and that has changed my stomach problems completely. Today is one of the first times I haven't had a b.m. first thing in the morning, so I'll have to have alittle more fiber this evening. Sometimes I go in the morning and once during the day, and sometimes just in the morning.
My daughter has also started a gluten-free diet and has noticed a huge difference after only 2 days. I suspect Mono-Sodium-Glutamat (Natrium Glutamat) may be aproblem for us also. i SOOO hope you find your answer. I have struggled with embarrassing moments and some isolation for 25 years!! What a relief and yet sad to have no cookies, cake, crackers, bread, sandwiches, muffins, pizza!! But I won't complain too much as it is worth it and my 13 year old daughter feels the same. I thought it would be a fight with her, but she is relieved that she too may be able to stop having close calls with embarrassing moments.
That is where I am at now. Also I am eating more green veggies--mostly salads. That along with limiting sweets also seems to be good for me and helps me not to have underarm odor. I suspect the kefir is a big factor as well. I do end up eating more meat than before. What else am I going to eat? I don't really like fruit--so I eat a lot of meat and salad, adding fiber when I think I need it. Let me know how things go. This is a reply to # 1,342,974Thanks. I do eat gluten, wheat, dairy, soy free and do not eat refined foods so mainly meat, quinoa, veggies, fruit (in the morning). I have many food sensitivities so at the moment can't have cinnamon. A doctor mentioned sjogren's syndrome to me a long time ago but I don't believe that at all. I think yeast and my leaky gut were my problems. I'll have to remember to notice if I don't have a b.m. in the morning if I had less fiber the day before. I want to try the kefir soon.
I had been using calcium citrate but the powder burned my lips and made them bleed so I switched to calcium carbonate but heard that is more constipating than citrate. I find that increasing vitamin c (ascorbic acid) helps with constipation etc better than increasing magnesium. Do you take Vit C?

This is a reply to # 1,343,089I have just started taking a multivitamin. I am just taking achewable one with the kids. I recently read that people with sjogren's (or maybe it was people with gluten intolerance--I'm pretty sure that's it) have a very big increased for all antioxidants because they don't absorb well. It listed vitamin c as well as fat soluble vitamins , zinc and selenium. I will definitely keep the vitamin c in mind--I don't think I get much as I don't like fruits. I'll have to see if there is a high vitamin c chewable both the kids and I can take. Thanks for reminding me about it!!
I hope you figure out the calcium thing. I don't take much because I eat dairy. I decided on the slo-mag because it gives more of the daily requirements of mag. than it does calcium. I had read sjogren's people need more magnesium and was worried about constipation.
By the way, I think kefir is much like yogurt--some lactose intolerance people can handle it. I have a friend whose son is lactose intolerant and he says he could live on kefir. You can learn to make your own so that you can ferment it longer to make sure you get the lactose out of it. It is less expensive and fairly simple once you learn how to do it. I said a prayer for you last night!! Let me know if you figure out what works for you. I KNOW there is an answer!!

This is a reply to # 1,343,162I do take extra selenium along with multi's etc. I'm sure they make chewable Vit C. Be careful with Slow-mag. It has other ingredients that you really don't need in a supplement. Maybe before you buy more, look into other brands. I did see the calcium in it is carbonate. I buy powders for calcium and magnesium so I don't have to swallow so many pills. I order mine, but I know the NOW brand is sold in stores more, depending on what is around you.
For the kefir, I'm going to try goat kefir. Just in case I have a problem with lactose it is supposed to be best. If that goes ok, I may try to make my own.

Hope you are doing better. I wanted to let you know that what seems to be working for me is the oils and I think water more than fiber. If I limit meat and take the omegas, I don't have to take so much fiber. Meat seems to constipate me. Just another thought for you. Also I read one person on this forum took psyllium capsules throughout the day to get fiber and that cured the person's gas problem. I am going to keep that in mind. Perhaps I can take it with some water when I eat a meal with more meat/cheese or anything constipating. Right now it's just trial and error, but I am improved TONS. Also, I have been running 30 minutes a day which I believe is helping tremendously. Actually, because I am new at it, I run about 4 minutes alternating with walking4-5 minutes until I reach 30-35 minutes on the treadmill. I think it is doing wonders as well, though I am not sure completely what is responsible. Very little bread+ NO whole wheat, omega 3's and water, running, a combination? This is a reply to # 1,333,613Thanks for the update. Psyllium is supposed to be bad for people with leaky gut and insoluble fiber better according to things I've read. I do eat a lot of meat. It does seem to be a matter of balance. I also do better when I workout or do some type of cardio at the gym versus sitting around all day. I also do not do well when having more fruit and fiber later in the day versus earlier (I normally workout earlier in day too). Also, I've been trying to make sure I drink more water since I had decreased with meals I think I was not drinking enough in between. I've also started paying attention to the amount of fiber per meal. Still trial and error for me. I try to take my fish and EPO oils throughout the day. Keep me posted and thanks for the help. I can't believe my everyday gas in the afternoon is over with.

This is a reply to # 1,333,613Hello again. When you do have gas do you take anything to help relieve it? I am still having problems some days and I believe it is "trapped" gas. I feel a lot of pressure on my stomach and bladder and I am very very uncomfortable. My stomach is rumbling and feels like something moving around inside.
Also, how much kefir do you have in the morning? I got some goat milk kefir and tried it once and waiting four days before I try it again.

This is a reply to # 1,349,343Hi! I really haven't had to worry about it recently. I have taken phazyme and gas-x in the past. My mom swears by gas-x. I really hope the kefir works for you.
The only gas I have had recently is in the early afternoon. I think it's from the flax meal. I do have trouble with dehydration and sjogren's type symptoms ( just dry all over) and so I think maybe I'm just not well-hydrated enough to take on much fiber first thing in the morning. I am going to take the flax meal at night and see if there is any difference. If it still gives me trouble, I'll change to all flax oil instead of the combination. Also, I Had been neglecting the kefir. Today I left off the flax meal and took my kefir, and NO gas all day. I generally have been drinking a smoothie with about 3/4 cup plain dannon naturals yogurt, maybe about 1/2 cup kefir, frozen blueberries, and stevia. I think the yogurt and the kefir are both VERY good for digestion. Sorry to get so long winded, just hoping something will help you. Also, I have found that drinking lots of water is still essential for me. On the days I don't, I tend to have trouble--though NOTHING like when I was eating wheat. I also think I may have some problems with soy, but I am not sure yet. No gas, just underarm odor. Either it is grains in general, sugar, or soy. Not sure yet. This is a reply to # 1,349,368Thanks. When I have gas it starts in the afternoon around 2:45. I normally have a drink with fiber/fats/protein/fruit etc around 6:30 am. I may need to try more fiber in the evening as well. I do drink a lot of water but I don't really drink a lot in the morning and I am thirsty when I get up.

I love coffee with a gluten-free muffin and also enchiladas with corn tortillas. But these things have been giving me a problem. Very minor compared to the past. Just thought I'd mention it in case you are eating acidic fruits like oranges or grapefruits with any starch/grain.

This is a reply to # 1,319,412I have had very similiar problems for the past few years. I found a cure that works for me 100% of the time. I believe my lower stomach flap leaks stomach acid while I sleep - resulting in exsesive break down of solids in my intenstines -resulting in gas the next day. I changed my eating patterns drastically to correct this. I eat a filling breakfast and lunch, then I eat nothing for the remainder of the day. I have not expiremented with eating time frames as this new diet has changed my life, but even eating the smallest amount of anything late in the day - such as a handfull of chips or sunflower seeds gets the acid flowing in my stomach - allowing acid to leak out at night. I can drink anything I want after lunch as this seems not to affect it.

Its amazing exactly how identical my gas problems are to yours. Thank God I'm not the only one :)
I too have leaky gut except my gas happens in the morning and stops once I get up. Then it starts again around 4 or 5pm for the rest of the night. (This is good considering it used to be all day, every 5 minutes and became painful).
To relieve my gas I found drinking peppermint tea and massage peppermint oil into stomach (gentle clockwise direction) really helps around 4pm - 5 pm in afternoon every day.
I have been on detoxes for 5 years and none of them have worked. I'm considering going off them altoghether. I found that taking 4 capsules (2 on waking and 2 before bed) of probiotics Lactobaciillus acidofolous really helps and I can't survive without them!
Vitamin c has become a must. It keeps my Acne down and if I stop it, I almost immediately get a cold or sore throat.
There is a book called "Friendly Food" that can help with food intolerances . I am just about to try it. It shows you how amines and Silicilades can effect intolerance thresholds. This may be causing my gas. Spinach has alot of fibre in it and is high in Silicilades. Maybe these things are effecting the gas rather than fibre levels? I will also try skipping my evening meal as suggested on the last post. Sounds like a good theory.
Have you heard of FDR Farmacist Desk Reference? By Don Tolman. I don't have it but I heard he recommends kefir and other fermented foods for vibrant health.
In terms of leaky gut treatment have you tried L-Glutamine powder? I am unfortunately allergic to it.
I hope that you are feeling better. It can be so hard to function socially with such an embarrasing problem like this one, as I am aware and have suffered too. All the best.
