So whenever I try to talk to a doctor about my Body Odor not only do they say I dont smell but they tell me I'm delusional. They say that what I believe is not true and that no matter what people tell me I won't believe the truth. Have any of you ever been diagnosed with a mental condition like delusional disorder schitsophrenia psychosis etc..... by doctors when you tried to talk about your Body Odor ??? See I dont know who to believe. Should I believe the doctors and my family or should I believe myself.

This is a reply to # 1,381,042My doctors said the same thing to me and I was even referred to a psychiatrist who said I was suffering from olfactory delusions. I'm sure that maybe people do suffer from that mental illness but I know from the insults I have received from people that I am not delusional. I don't know what your situation is, but the best thing you can do is do some research on Olfactory reference syndrome and see if it does fit your symptoms.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,381,253That sounds very much like my problem. I didnt know there was a such thing as ors. See the thing about it is how do I know if I smell or not to know if I have that disorder. How do people treat you to let you know that you smell bad?

This is a reply to # 1,381,266I know that I'm not imagining this because I can smell myself (not eveyone with body odour can) and I have also had a lot of negative comments from people - like people saying within earshot that I smell or stink etc. Or people holding their noses around me or backing off when I start talking etc. Maybe if you haven't had any negative comments but can smell your body odour, it may be quite mild and not noticeable to other people. Another way to find out is to maybe try whatever anti-psychotic medication they give you and see if it makes any difference to your perceptions the body odour. That's the only thing I can think of that might let you know whether your problem really is chronic body odour or something psychological.

This is a reply to # 1,381,596the problem is that doctors don't take enough time to see if we stink or not. when I told my doctor about my problem he acted like it may be all in my head. he even said "if I leave the room and come back in, will I smell it, because I don't smell anything right now..." Doctors want to diagnose a person within 10-15 minutes and move on to the next patient. That does not work with our conditions because if you are like me, you smell different one day to the next. Sometimes I smell as soon as I wake up, sometimes it takes a while to kick in but one thing I know for sure is that it is not in my mind. I have had to isolate myself to a certain extent because of my odor. I can assure you that if I did not smell I would be happy as hell and would no longer have to make sure I am sitting far enough away from others so that they don't smell me.
My house smells. Sometimes worse than other times but I can guarantee you that it's from me. I can smell it on my clothes, especially pants when I take them off.
I don't want to say that there aren't others out there that may be imagining their odor, but I know for sure that it is not in my imagination and if doctor could spend a day with me he/she would agree I assure you.

WOW! I can’t believe I stumbled on to this. I have suffered from the anxiety and stress that comes with isolating yourself from others and even worse feeling like I am going crazy because none of the doctors I’ve seen understand me. By the way that was my favorite one (Doctor)"If I leave the room and come back will I be able to smell it?" (Me) Hmm, let me see you stethoscope, I’ll just hang myself now.
I think my issue began about 4 years ago and I have searched the internet ever since and have never once seen anything on TMAU. I’m sure I have it but am scared to get tested. If it comes back neg, I don’t know what I will do. I assumed it had something to do with my liver, urine and or gut. I sometimes smell pungent, or even like urine or worse, sometimes I smell fecal. My breath smells and it seems to come from my gut. Before I changed my diet, I noticed it was very strong shortly after eating. This problem has all but killed me so far. Its destroying my career, my mirage is gone. I have little to no social life. Infect my interaction with others is always at a distance or by phone. I won’t commit to anything that involves groups and I’m afraid to see my old friend’s because I want them to remember me how I used to be. Funnier, if that’s a word.
I think my dogs even turned away from me once or twice.
I still love her though.
I’m sorry if this post isn’t full of helpful info, but it sure feels good to unload, and to maybe even have an answer. By the way I also suffer from bi-polar/ Depression since childhood. Believe you me, the two don’t play well together.

This is a reply to # 1,381,042Believe yourself! I stunk up the entire psychward of Children's Hospital in Boston... even though I did, they said that the smell was all in my head, even though they were coughing and holding their noses themselves... They diagnosed me with Body Dysmorphic Disorder.. ????? I know!! What?? Anyway there's nothing I could do... no one tried to help me. My psychiatrist I had to see afterwards just put me on anti-depressants which caused a lot of problems for me and also exacerbated the odor... The psychiatrist left the building apparently and didn't tell me, but she didn't care... she seemed like she just had to do her job and she held her nose and coughed... I told her about TMAU and she said it was in my head. She disappeared without informing me. You would think that someone out of all these people would believe me. But they all just keep telling my mom that I'm crazy... Anyway, I haven't left my room in years. My mom says I need to get a job now but if she's going to ignore everything then I will too... No one ever listens.

Did anyone say anything about your odor, you know like what is that smell or something??? Did you have to stay with a roomate if so how did she react to you? How long were you in the hospital? How old were you? How long have you had bo?How did the other patients treat you? I'm sorry for all the questions but I was in a mental ward as well and I just want to compare notes..
