(NaturalNews) In a study just published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) report on cats developing severe neurological symptoms due to a degradation of myelin, the fatty insulator of nerve fibers called axons. Because myelin facilitates the conduction of nerve signals, when it is lost or damaged there can be impairment of sensation, movement, thinking and other functions, depending on what particular nerves are affected. This loss of myelin is found in several disorders of the central nervous system in humans -- the best known being multiple sclerosis (MS).
So what caused the cats to develop neurological problems? Although the researchers' statement to the media practically buries the fact, a close read shows the animals were fine until fed irradiated food. What's more, when they were taken off the irradiated diet, the animals' nervous systems began healing.
The new study took place when the researchers were faced with reports of a mysterious illness in pregnant cats. A commercial company had been testing various diets on the animals to see how the food impacted growth and development in the felines. The food used, it turns out, had been irradiated. Irradiation, which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for many human as well as animal foods, involves exposing foods briefly to a radiant energy source such as gamma rays or electron beams in order to kill bacteria.
Some of the cats eating the irradiated cat food exhibited very severe neurological symptoms, including movement disorders, vision loss and even paralysis. "After being on the diet for three to four months, the pregnant cats started to develop progressive neurological disease," said Ian Duncan, a professor of medical sciences at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine and an authority on demyelinating diseases, in a statement to the media.
The sick cats were shown to have widely distributed the very severe demyelization of the central nervous system. Their neurological symptoms were very much like those seen in people with MS and other demyelization disorders. When the felines were taken off the irradiated foods, they began to recover slowly. However, according to Dr. Duncan, the restored myelin sheaths were no longer as thick as normal myelin sheaths.
The finding is important, the scientists concluded in their study, because it shows the central nervous system retains the ability to reestablish myelin -- so strategies that could be developed to spur the growth of new myelin sheaths anywhere nerves themselves are preserved could be a possible therapy for treating a host of severe neurological diseases in humans. "The key thing is that it absolutely confirms the notion that remyelinating strategies are clinically important," Duncan stated.
Curiously, although the scientists' related their findings to possible human applications, they were quick to dismiss a possible connection between people, irradiated food and health risk. "We think it is extremely unlikely that (irradiated food) could become a human health problem," Duncan explained in the media statement. "We think it is species specific."
However, not everyone agrees irradiated food is fine for humans or animals. According to the Center for Food Safety, studies have shown irradiation produces volatile toxic chemicals such as benzene and toluene, which are known or suspected to cause cancer and birth defects. A 2001 study found an association between colon tumors and 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACB's), a new chemical compound detected only in foods that have been irradiated.

· Irradiation damages food by breaking up molecules and creating free radicals. The free radicals kill some bacteria, but they also bounce around in the food, damage vitamins and enzymes, and combine with existing chemicals (like pesticides) in the food to form new chemicals, called unique radiolytic products (URPs).
· Some of these URPs are known toxins (benzene, formaldehyde, lipid peroxides) and some are unique to irradiated foods. Scientists have not studied the long-term effect of these new chemicals in our diet. Therefore, we cannot assume they are safe.
· Irradiated foods can lose 5%-80% of many vitamins (A, C, E, K and B complex). The amount of loss depends on the dose of irradiation and the length of storage time.
· Most of the food in the American diet is already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for irradiation: beef, pork, lamb, poultry, wheat, wheat flour, vegetables, fruits, shell eggs, seeds for sprouting, spices, herb teas. (Dairy is already pasteurized). A food industry petition currently before the FDA asks for approval for luncheon meats, salad bar items, sprouts, fresh juices and frozen foods. Another petition before the USDA asks for approval for imported fruits and vegetables.
· Irradiation damages the natural digestive enzymes found in raw foods. This means the body has to work harder to digest them.
· If unlabeled, raw foods that have been irradiated look like fresh foods, but nutritionally they are like cooked foods, with decreased vitamins and enzymes. The FDA allows these foods to be labeled "fresh."
· Irradiated fats tend to become rancid.
· When high-energy electron beams are used, trace amounts of radioactivity may be created in the food.
Science has not proved that a long-term diet of irradiated foods is safe for human health.
· The longest human feeding study was 15 weeks. No one knows the long-term effects of a life-long diet that includes foods which will be frequently irradiated, such as meat, chicken, vegetables, fruits, salads, sprouts and juices.
· There are no studies on the effects of feeding babies or children diets containing irradiated foods, except a very small and controversial study from India that showed health effects.
· Studies on animals fed irradiated foods have shown increased tumors, reproductive failures and kidney damage. Some possible causes are: irradiation-induced vitamin deficiencies, the inactivity of enzymes in the food, DNA damage, and toxic radiolytic products in the food.
· The FDA based its approval of irradiation for poultry on only 5 of 441 animal-feeding studies. Marcia van Gemert, Ph.D., the toxicologist who chaired the FDA committee that approved irradiation, later said, "These studies reviewed in the 1982 literature from the FDA were not adequate by 1982 standards, and are even less accurate by 1993 standards to evaluate the safety of any product, especially a food product such as irradiated food." The 5 studies are not a good basis for approval of irradiation for humans, because they showed health effects on the animals or were conducted using irradiation at lower energies than those the FDA eventually approved.
· The FDA based its approval of irradiation for fruits and vegetables on a theoretical calculation of the amount of URPs in the diet from one 7.5 oz. serving/day of irradiated food. Considering the different kinds of foods approved for irradiation, this quantity is too small and the calculation is irrelevant.
· Even with current labeling requirements, people cannot avoid eating irradiated food. That means there is no control group, and epidemiologists will never be able to determine if irradiated food has any health effects.
· Science is always changing. The science of today is not the science of tomorrow. The science we have today is not adequate to prove the long-term safety of food irradiation.
Irradiation covers up problems that the meat and poultry industry should solve
· Irradiation covers up the increased fecal contamination that results from speeded up slaughter and decreased federal inspection, both of which allow meat and poultry to be produced more cheaply. Prodded by the industry, the USDA has allowed a transfer of inspection to company inspectors. Where government inspectors remain, they are not allowed to condemn meat and poultry now that they condemned 20 years ago.
· Because of this deregulation (continued under President Clinton, a protégé of Tyson Foods), the meat and poultry industry has recently lost money and suffered bad publicity from food-poisoning lawsuits and expensive product recalls. Irradiation is a "magic bullet" that will enable them to say that the product was "clean" when it left the packing plant. (Irradiation, however, does not sterilize food, and any bacteria that remain can grow to toxic proportions if the food is not properly stored and handled.)
· In 2000, seven meat industry associations submitted a petition to USDA to redefine key regulations relating to contamination. If accepted by USDA, this petition would permit unlimited fecal contamination during production, as long as irradiation was used afterwards.
Labeling is necessary to inform people so they can choose to avoid irradiated foods.
· Because irradiated foods have not been proven safe for human health in the long term, prominent, conspicuous and truthful labels are necessary for all irradiated foods. Consumers should be able to easily determine if their food has been irradiated. Labels should also be required for irradiated ingredients of compound foods, and for restaurant and institutional foods.
· Because irradiation can deplete vitamins, labels should state the amount of vitamin loss after irradiation, especially for fresh foods that are usually eaten fresh. Consumers have the right to know if they are buying nutritionally impaired foods.
· Current US labels are not sufficient to enable consumers to avoid irradiated food. Foods are labeled only to the first purchaser. Irradiated spices, herb teas and supplement ingredients, foods that are served in restaurants, schools, etc., or receive further processing, do not bear consumer labels. Consumer labels are required only for foods sold whole (like a piece of fruit) or irradiated in the package (like chicken breasts). The text with the declaration of irradiation can be as small as the type face on the ingredient label. The US Department of Agriculture requirements have one difference: irradiated meat or poultry that is part of another food (like a tv dinner) must be disclosed on the label.
· The US Food and Drug Administration is currently rewriting the regulation for minimum labeling, and will release it for public comment by early 2002. They may eliminate all required text labels. If they do retain the labels, Congress has told them to use a "friendly" euphemism instead of "irradiation."
Electron-beam irradiation today means nuclear irradiation tomorrow.
· The source of the irradiation is not listed on the label.
· The original sponsor of food irradiation in the US was the Department of Energy, which wanted to create a favorable image of nuclear power as well as dispose of radioactive waste. These goals have not changed. Cobalt-60, which is used for irradiation, must be manufaactured in a nuclear reactor.
· Many foods cannot be irradiated using electron beams. E-beams only penetrate 1-1.5 inches on each side, and are suitable only for flat, evenly sized foods like patties. Large fruits, foods in boxes, and irregularly shaped foods must be irradiated using x-rays or gamma rays from nuclear materials.
· Countries that lack a cheap and reliable source of electricity for e-beams use nuclear materials. Opening U.S. markets to irradiated food encourages the spread of nuclear irradiation worldwide.
Irradiation using radioactive materials is an environmental hazard.
· The more nuclear irradiators, the more likelihood of a serious accident in transport, operation or disposal of the nuclear materials.
· Food irradiation facilities have already contaminated the environment. For example, in the state of Georgia in 1988, radioactive water escaped from an irradiation facility. The taxpayers were stuck with $47 million in cleanup costs. Radioactivity was tracked into cars and homes. In Hawaii in 1967 and New Jersey in 1982, radioactive water was flushed into the public sewer system.
· Numerous worker exposures have occurred in food irradiation facilities worldwide.
Irradiation doesn't provide clean food.
· Because irradiation doesn't kill all the bacteria in a food, the ones that survive are by definition radiation-resistant. These bacteria will multiply and eventually work their way back to the 'animal factories'. Soon thereafter, the bacteria that contaminate the meat will no longer be killed by currently approved doses of irradiation. The technology will no longer be usable, while stronger bacteria contaminate our food supply.
· People may become more careless about sanitation if irradiation is widely used. Irradiation doesn't kill all the bacteria in a food. In a few hours at room temperature, the bacteria remaining in meat or poultry after irradiation can multiply to the level existing before irradiation.
· Some bacteria, like the one that causes botulism, as well as viruses and prions (which are believed to cause Mad Cow Disease) are not killed by current doses of irradiation.
· Irradiation encourages food producers to cut corners on sanitation, because they can 'clean up' the food just before it is shipped.
Irradiation does nothing to change the way food is grown and produced.
· Irradiated foods can have longer shelf lives than nonirradiated foods, which means they can be shipped further while appearing 'fresh.' Food grown by giant farms far away may last longer than nonirradiated, locally grown food, even if it is inferior in nutrition and taste. Thus, irradiation encourages centralization and hurts small farmers.
· The use of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and other agrichemicals, as well as pollution and energy use, are not affected. Irradiation is applied by the packer after harvest or slaughter.
· Free-market economists say irradiation is 'efficient': it provides the cheapest possible food for the least possible risk. But these economists are not concerned about the impaired nutritional quality of the food. They are not considering the environmental effects of large-scale corporate farming, the social costs of centralization of agriculture and loss of family farms, the replacement of unionized, impartial government inspectors with company inspectors , the potential long-term damage to human health, and the possibility of irradiation-resistant super-bacteria. This is a reply to # 1,389,818Well after reading that great info you posted I thought, "Now that makes allot of things I have been wondering about make sense!" I knew irradiation had been approved but for so many things, that I did not know.
Geez, its like they are TRYING to KILL us. Finding organic where I live is hard. I have to drive to downtown Pittsburgh(45minutes away)to Tradrer Joes and Whole Foods and even then I can't afford all I need.
Sheesh, you know I had been feeling bad stressing about my autistic son like, what did I do wrong before he was born, or while he was in the womb or after he was born and almost dying and in NICU? Well I LIVED IN THIS WORLD!
I never gave him shots or had any cavities/dental work and always tried to eat organic when ever possible. I didn't take prenatal vitamins(drugs).I have never drank or smoked. But I was still poisoned anyways, and my sweet son. I see him struggle and I am MAD!
I am sorry but I am mad and we should be mad at least at the establishment that seeks to harm us. I just am grateful there are still people out there, like Uny and Wings that will still take the time to EDUCATE others, for no other reason that they do not care to sit back and see others suffer.

I don't have any children, but I do have a mother - and even though she's still alive, she's just a shell of her former self (and lives in horrific misery daily). Why? When I first started learning about natural health and healing, I got to a point where I had to uncover the "why" of it all. I had the 'facts' and the healing methodologies, but it wasn't enough...and it wasn't adding up right. Simple pharmaceutical greed couldn't be the reason that there was a safe easy 'cure for whatever', but it wasn't being taught to our doctors and readily available to us. SOMEONE (or some group of 'someones') would have stood up and made the truth known long before now...IF the playing field was level and fair.

So Rocky53 & dug in deeper and deeper, finding more and more disturbing truths the further we dug. When you say they want to "kill us", you're actually not that far off the mark. :::sigh:::
What we're actually looking at is a centuries old plan for global domination ('not that hard to believe when history shows that trend...first a county, then a country, now a group of countries -the European Union-, and soon to be North American Union). The 'power-elite' have been doing it for centuries.
Since the times of ancient Egypt "the PTB" (powers that be) have been controlling populations through their diet (first done with slaves, giving them enough 'nutrition' to work through the day, but not enough to rebel or fight for freedom). In this century it's been done with a combination of things - fluoride to lower our IQ's and create apathy, poisoning our food, and 'dumbing us down'.
"They" play an insidiously slow hand - soon there will be virtually no one that can remember what is truly normal (or feel what it's like to be that way). And even as old as I am (almost 50), I'm a LONG way from ever being able to know what is was like to be as educated and physically healthy as a typical 8th grader at the turn of the century.
Sadly (and most frustratingly) we HAVE to 'know our Enemy' in order to know what do to and 'get up the gumption' to stay healthy in this toxin world.
Whether folks choose to believe or to research this "New World Order", really makes no difference to me at all. We're still left with the same facts - the planet and our food source is rapidly being poisoned, and in order to stay healthy we MUST "pull out the stops" and do MORE than the healers did that have gone on before us.
Naturalgirl, I'm glad you're seeing and understand the truth (although I'm never 'glad' for anybody to have to know it) - but many times it's our anger that helps us to FIGHT! And "fight", we MUST do if we're to stay healthy. It really isn't a 'cute little hobby' or some kind of passing fad, it's essential to our health, our freedom and our rights as human beings.

This is a reply to # 1,390,560As bad as it sounds it that anger that helps you fight and work to overcome it. I read the link to the post about your mom. I am sorry to hear what "they" did to her. It sounds like my MIL. She is a walking pharmaceutical cocktail. She takes stong antidepressants and the docs keep raising the doses because they aren't working anymore. She takes Percaset(sp) daily for pain and had fibroanygia(sp again!) and a host of other symptoms. Its kind of funny in a sad way but she is always calling me a "health nut" and saying other things like that in an almost angry way. I have tried to help her but she wants to drink her coffe and eat her packaged foods so there's not much I can do.
When I was pregnant with my son something terrible happened. It was so bad that I was in counseling for it. It was on of those kind of situations where outsiders told me they wondered how I could function. Sometimes all I did at the time was "live" for my baby. So sadly, I did my best to try and eat but I actually was 5 pounds thinner when I delivered my baby boy.I let the stress take me over. They had to put me on oxygen as I couldn't breathe properly during the delivery. When he was born he was making a croaking sound and all the sudden the nurses and docs were running around calling for backup, my husband crying and oh it was not a pleasant day. (he was born on Fri the 13!)
He was in the ICU for 2 weeks with the pneumonia. Basically, I had to let them give him the drugs or he would of died.(I don't think I had much choice in the matter anyways.)
So anyways, at 17 months he was diagnosed because I have an autistic bother and we saw the sigs and because he was not speaking at all and rocking back and forth on his knees 45 minutes out of an hour or staring at his hands. We put him in occupation therapy and speech and dev. therapy and later Pt therapy. He has come a LONG way in a year and half. He now smiles and wants to be held. He looks at people in the face and sometimes a word or two or even three will pop out unexpectedly. He does have gut issues. I do not give him dairy except I do on occasion give him organic plain yogurt with honey added. I do a modified diet that's similar to "Special diet for Special kids." but I do give him wheat bread as he loves bread and its impossible keeping it from him when other members of the family eat it. I try to make my own or buy all natural wheat/oat bread with no corn syrup. His diet could be better. It one of the things I try not to stress about but still do. He is such a sweet sensitive boy. I just want the best for him but in this crazy, polluted world I wonder how can I avoid all these toxins?
So, reading your post I think of how many things out there are designed to hurt us/get us sick that's its amazing that most humans function!!

BUT, I also want to encourage you to INSIST he eats what you know is best. If you k-n-o-w know that 'wheat' is a definitely issue for him, then....NO WHEAT! Of course, if you don't know that for sure, it's a different story.

Aaaah that "mommy heart"...that sadly, CAN spoil a child to death. Be careful about that :)
That's fantastic about making the bread - as far as learning how to avoid the toxins, just keep on learning...and learning how fun & yummy it can be. Chop up a couple-three cups of organic fruits and a few bananas, and freeze them (let him help with all this, or take part however he can). And then when they're frozen, you can put them through any 'quality juicer' (not a centrifugual), and it's come out as big "ice cream worm", making curley-ques in the bowl...it's SO yummy and a "kid pleaser" about a million different ways!
I do realize that you don't know as much about natural health & healing as I do...and you can't possibly believe it as much as I do (yet! :::grin:::) - but there are SO many things you can do for him right now that will make a HUGE difference, and allow him to 'get caught up' faster than you ever believe!
And "right now" is VERY important. The more you do to improve his responses at this stage of the game, the less he'll EVER "be behind" next year or next decade. And the less 'bad patterns' he'll have to reverse.
But "mommy" HAS to be totally in charge - 'no feeling sorry for him, and NO being a 'wishy washy parent' like "they" have conditioned us to believe we/you should be....it's bad enough 'they' caused it. You don't want him looking back when he's older, saying/thinking things like: "Mom, I couldn't make the right choices for myself, I was too little then...but now it's ME that's having to struggle because you didn't make me eat the right things (or stop me from eating the bad things)".
All children (and adults actually) are like any other animal...if they get hungry enough, they'll eat. While "they" may have convinced society that is 'harsh' or 'cruel' to do what it takes to ensure a child eats properly (like caring parents HAVE done for CENTURIES)...making sure an autistic child (or ANY child) eats healthily IS a parents responsibility - no matter WHAT we've been brainwashed to believe.
Many autistic children have 'gut issues', if you'll tell me what they are, I can give you some healing thoughts.
And if you haven't already, 2x weekly Bentonite clay baths are fantastic...and if you could get him to "play in the mud" and rub it all over his head, that would be even better! (I realize, some autistic children are very 'head shy'...but if you can do that, it will help get the toxic metals out of his lil' body). I've read several cases of non-verbal autistic children that started talking a bit after just ONE clay bath :) (but NO Bentonite down septic tanks).

She's been duped :( Just like the doctors have been duped. They have no IDEA that the education they got was designed 100% by the pharmaceutical cartel. They've never even had a chance to learn 'the healing arts', but they've been brainwashed to believe they're smarter and safer than anyone else in the world. Do your best to be firm with your MIL, (I've always found it helps when I really DO feel sorry for them) - just keep focused on what IS right, and someday (you may be surprised) it'll be YOU she turns to when she knows how you've healed yourself and your son.

This is a reply to # 1,391,337Thanks for replying. I just want to add that maybe I came across wrong but he has no allergies or ill effects from wheat. Its just that there is a book called,"Special Diet for Special kids." that has a diet for kids with autism. They advocate no wheat. I tried taking him off wheat and saw no change.(it was for several months) so I added back in the wheat. He only gets it a few times a week. I guess I still wonder as I have heard wheat isn't good for gut issues but for him I saw difference on or off.
I see so many autistic kids at the clinic where he gets therapy and they are NOT disciplined because the mom feels sorry for them. So then you have this autistic kid screaming and yelling and hitting and not listening. Its a mess. So I obviously want to avoid this and give him limits. Strangely, he's not hard to discipline because as soon as you say,"No" he'll stop and won't do it again. It will backfire sometimes if he's throwing around food and I say, "Stop throwing your food." and he will stop and not eat or have anything to do with his food because he heard "stop" and "food"
I had heard about clay baths but sadly washing his hair is a nightmare because touching his head is an issue. When he gets his hair cut I have to hold him down while the stylist cuts and anther one helps me hold him down. Needless to say I am a big tipper! =)

This is a reply to # 1,391,543I'm SO glad to know you understand about having 'some level' of control with autistic issues - it's very important :) Good for you!
I understand, there seems to QUITE a "head thing" with some autistic children; I've read what you've experienced before.
In some other life sometime/somewhere, I must have had zillions of children or taught school, or motivated children...or maybe it's because I'm such a huge child at heart myself (I have more Dr. Seuss, Disney and various animated films than I have adult movies...and I have no children)
Anyway, the reason I mention that, is that (not meant to be a 'brag'), I'm VERY good at motivating children of all ages. So I'm going to throw this out (barely knowing ANYthing about your son & his issues...but knowing a LOT about adults and OUR issues):
Bentonite Clay = mud. Mud? IS FUN!!!!!
Wanna get Bentonite clay on his head (and all over him)? When the weather warms up, get a big pot (or a very tiny swimming pool thing) and 5 pounds of bentonite...add water until it's muddy like 'mud slide', both of your strip down to your skivvies and get out and PLAY IN THE MUD!! Throw some at yourself and laugh your butt off - smear it on your face - and laugh even harder - get him to join in (it's likely inevitable!) - pull up grass and stick it to mud, smear it in your hair, stick your head in the pot and 'shake like a dog' - add some dandelion to your 'mud head' and do some Indian dances and just all around - have a big old MUD PARTY!!!! And be SURE to invite ME!!! (please!)
Run around the yard for an hour or so (or more) and then hose each other off...and be sure to put a tight cover on the Bentonite so it doesn't soak up 'air toxins' and then you can reuse it :)
Healing is FUN!!!!

It's GREAT he will touch his head!!! And I wouldn't be surprised to someday learn that pine needles are very effective for some aspect of his autism. It's just AMAZING how children & animals are SO 'in tune' and intuitive!
Of course, maybe he just likes the smell and feel of them - but either way, it's great he'll put them on his head :)

Even if I had the inclination to sell all kinds of individual herbs & products, it just wouldn't make sense. I'm not "big enough" to get major discounts (nor can I afford to invest in large quantities of things I don't know if I can sell) - and with the cost of shipping now-a-days that I pay to me...it'd almost be cheaper for most anyone to just 'buy direct' :)
